Cataract surgery.

Hi everyone I'm back but with problems.....🧐Due to large doses of prednisolone my cataracts have grown.

I can't lay flat on my back and breath ,,,,,. tried it once with almost disastrous consequences ....

I need to sit upright in a chair., I know this happens , but where, and

which NHS hospital. ???

I have researched the surgeon who devised this method of removal

and would dearly love to see him , however its unlikely to happen.

If anyone has had cataract removal sitting up right in what's called a dentist chair ,I would to hear the details.

Trusting all my old pals are well .......

Hi Jo, good to hear from you but sorry about the predicament you find yourself in. Pete was able to lie flat for his cataracts so l can’t help really. Hoping someone else can though.

I wasn't completely upright but only went back until i was comfortable. I was elevated and no problems.xxSheila

Hello Sheila, bless you for such a speedy reply. So it was a dentists chair , unfolded ...and you were partially upright ........I feel I am going barmy and no mistake. !! At the point of ' comfort 'where was your head. ?? in a normal position & where were your eyes facing .In front of you or to the ceiling ..,Sorry for being a pest asking what sound like daft questions,

The clinician who rang me this afternoon sounded like a school girl and her understanding of my problems was not good. lf you can think of anything else I would be most grateful........

Good morning Sheila , it's a me again . Was the surgeon sitting infront of you or sitting at the side of you during the op...or standing .

I know what I need and want ,it's just finding the right place .

Have already refused a general anaesthetic.

It's the same old thing ......silver hair , old lady , get what is given .

You have had what I am looking for ........it's the special technique .I have to wait for someone to come off holiday and ring me ...... Hopefully I will know then if this surgical unit is the right one for me.

There's even talk of a fast track to save me the extra days travel.....All surgery be completed within a very few weeks ............Living in the country has it's down side ...everywhere is so far away..

Hi I just had one done today.The surgeon was behind me and it was a dentist chair. All went well . I was referred by my dr and my hospital outsoursed me to a semi private / NH clinic. Because of my COPD and hip problems it went like a dream. I can even see very small print and I had my surgery at 1.30pm this afternoon. The name of the clinic is CHEC. .Health Care for Local People. Hi I am due the same surgery soon but have same problem I was thinking of having a ga instead of a local injection to numb the eye but unfortunately It is too dangerous for me to be put to sleep while they do the op due to my health I suffer with asthma and bronchiectasis and am a.retainer .So wud be grateful if any one has some advise

Good morning. I have recently in the last 3 months had both cataracts done privately and they just spend over an hour firstly putting multiple drops in your eye, And you don't feel anything. All you feel is cold water washing your eye out. I was referred by Boots opticians and it was paid for by the NHS. I lay down like I do in bed. And they raised the headrest until I was comfortable with it. The procedure only takes about 15 minutes to complete. Brian

I had both cataracts removed in 2021. When you see your specialist and have your pre-op mention all your concerns which they will write down and highlight. You can definitely have the procedure done in a ‘dentist’s’ chair or as reclined as you want. They’ll be used to seeing patients who can’t lie down for one reason or another. I also have asthma and bronchectasis. I asked ‘what happens if I need to cough’, my surgeon said just tell me or raise your hand. This did happen, they just stopped the procedure, I had my cough then they recommenced. Hope this helps.

I had my cataract surgery in Feb this year. Had the same problem couldn't lie flat I worried myself sick about it. I took light sedation and on the day of surgery the trolley I was on had different angles. I was lying flat but more on my side with my legs elevated. I got both eyes done took 20 minutes and was well worth it.I hope you manage to get it done it makes such a difference.

Hi had both mine done at a private clinic on NHS I've ILD so struggle more so when laying down .I explained my problems at my first consultation . When I went back for both operations they had all this in my notes .5 mins before the opp the surgeon came to see me to see if I'd any concerns after reading and listening to me he decided to give me oxygen tube to help with the breathing and I wasn't ina chair but sat up at an angle that suited me like I do in bed . The procedure took around 8 mins each time .It's the best thing I've ever done it's given me a new lease of life the colours are so different and after 60 yrs of wearing glasses I'm free of them apart from reading glasses ..Good luck don't worry it's painless I'm sure once you explain to them they will accommodate all your needs

I had my cataracts sorted about 8 years ago, one at a time, and between chest infections. Those spaces weren't easy to find. I was worried that I would cough and jerk about whilst the knife was around. So, I asked for a total anesthetic, and the doctor said that they would "look after me". Anyway, the results are great. My distance vision is better than I can remember, but still need reading glasses.

I also never lay flat these days, but might have done then, can't remember. However, I stopped having chest infections, (apart from a stint of pneumonia and pleurisy) since eradicating Black Mould in our bathroom in April 2018.

My brother can't lay flat due to severe scoliosis so he was propped up on cushions. All went well and he's fine.

I had cataract surgery in each eye this year. Right eye one week and left eye the next. It took about 5 - 10 minutes and when the Doctor told me he was done, I was unaware he had even started. My vision went to 20/25. I no longer required glasses. I use reading glasses for my phone and computer but that’s because I have an astigmatism which for $2500 for each eye, could have been corrected as well, but that’s a procedure my insurance wouldn’t pay for so I elected not to have it. After cataract surgery Everything is much brighter and colors much more vibrant. I see every street sign clearly without the need for eye glasses. It was amazing surgery no pain no fuss! In and out In no time. And I am 74! Get the surgery - you will be so happy you did! Any apprehension you have when you have the first eye done will be lost by the time they do your second, that is if you have cataracts in both eyes. Zero problems since the surgery and it’s been over 6 months now.

I had cataract removal right eye March left eye June they asked if f I was ok laying flat - for how long??? Said I need a pillow under my knees however I was ok it was over a n 8 minutes. Everyone is different - but …… I had no idea steroids made cataracts worse!!!

The good news is I can see for miles but I now need glasses to read my phone haha

Pleased your cataract surgery was successful, yes in deed Prednisolone can cause various problems, after the cataracts for me is the dentist ......oh dear oh dear ........

what do you do when visiting dentist ? i cough when i lie flat so we tried putting small rolled up towel under head until the optimum was reached and I could breathe and he could work too . did the same when i had cataracts done hough that was years ago and breathing worse now.

cataracts best small procedure ever invented . ! be patient and try to find best position before you go and go for it.

then world is a magic place when you can look around depending on how long the sight has been shaded . eyes over react and colours spring to life as never been seen before .
