Hello, I had an operation back in September for the removal of a lump in my lung. this proved to be Silicosis. Since then I have had three X Rays all showing an oblong shadow over the operation area, this hasn't altered at all during this time, it is in the same place and is the same size. I had a CT Scan this week and the doctors have told me it is just fluid, and not to worry they will see me in 6 months. Well, all the articles I have read say that it is a worry. I want to go on holiday in a few weeks and this involves a 7-hour flight to a warm dry country. (Dubai). I haven't asked the insurance company yet if this is OK but the Doctors say there is no reason why I shouldn't go. I am quite well otherwise, coughing a bit but nowhere near what I used to like. So the question is should I go or should I stay. lol I really could do with a holiday as could my long-suffering wife.
Thanks Dave

Had a letter from the hospital this morning they are saying that the shadow is encapsulated fluid post-operatively. Wait for 6 months and have another X Ray then.
Hi and it goes without saying I hope the shadow ends up being nothing to worry about. Could I be nosey if you dont mind and ask what type of work you used to or still do to cause silicosis?
Hi I am a carpenter by trade. I worked on building sites when young but later made my living fitting kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. This involved cutting fibre board, chipboard and tiles, including slate. So it could have been anything that caused it, we will never know for certain.
Thankyou for the reply. The reason for asking is that where I was working I wasnt provided with ppe whilst working with ceramics, woods including mdf etc. Have had asthma for 29 years and copd for the past 3 but I was also quite a heavy smoker for quite a few years (40 to 60 roll your own a day) for about 30 years but have been stopped for 4. There seems to be a good link with copd (obviously with tabacco) and wood dusts, also silica (quartz), ceramics etc. I wish you well and I hope you have a fantastic holiday with your family.
