COPD and rotator cuff surgery

Well Wednesday was my surgery and the anesthesiologist came in and informed me he wasn't worried about my lungs and the general anesthesia -but what couldn't be used with my lungs was the nerve bloc . That it would block the nerve but would also paralyze my diaphragm --and put me on a respirator for a while and maybe do long term damage. I was fighting back tears as the surgeon said I could back out and live with the limited use and continual pain of that arm---or go ahead without having the 12 hour pain free (and then take meds) and that he would try and place some pain meds inside my arm. I told him to go ahead and operate. What a sweet surprise. I have not been in extreme pain at all ---in fact it's been quite tolerable. Also I have been managing the rest room quite well with one hand!

It’s good to know you were able to have the surgery. And great news about the relative lack of pain. Long may that continue. Wishing you a good recovery 😊

Oh gosh I feel your pain .ive been diagnosed with Cervical disc degeneration disease..it's awful along with COPD and Bronchiectasis..I'm in a "flare up" now..it's excruciating, and relentless pain..I'm so glad your feeling better.💝

I'm sorry about your pain as well. Of course tonight it's a little worse --but still not the excruciating pain that everyone predicted. It's in a sling for 6 to 8 weeks --sigh--then almost a year of recovery--I never knew how complicated the shoulders are--- wow -I offered to do 10 meniscus tear repairs instead of this but I was told it doesn't work that way.

Thanks to all for the good wishes.

Well that is really good news Patmc1 and makes me a little less anxious for my op booked on 28th for the same procedure. I have bronchiectasis not copd so am not sure if the same rules apply. Its just the long term recovery that is so hard, as well as having your arm in a sling for the 6-8 week period. But I am so pleased that things have started well for you and you are managing ok. Keep us updated on your progress x

Great news! I've had rotator cuff pain since last Christmas and it's awful so I totally sympathise that you had to get to the operation stage.

I've spent a few hundred pounds on therapeutic massage since Jan '19 and now nearly have full use back.

That's good news because my other (right) shoulder is also torn and I'm hoping that a shot and lots of therapy will help that one.

That's good news you're over the surgery and feeling the benefit.

Like peege I've also had rotator cuff injury since last Christmas and have no idea how it came about. My GP referred me for physiotherapy at local hospital but instead I did the exercises suggested by two physiotherapists on You Tube called Brad and Bob, who are really excellent. It's taken until now and almost recovered and pain free now, just an occasional twinge. I now always look at Brad and Bob videos as they cover everything, including exercises for most conditions.

That's good to know as well. I shall look up Brad & Bob! Never want it to happen again

Thanks to all. My pt starts in 3 weeks. Oh a heads up --the ice machine supplied by the surgery was worthless. 3 and none worked. I had bought one on Amazon -just in case-and that's working like a charm. The supplied sling is also not great but I'm coping.

It's such a good feeling that the chance you took to have the operation went so well. I can almost feel your relief! I have had a similar problem to you in the past so understand what a big decision it would have been. Keep following the instructions they will have given you and let us know how you get on. Best wishes. Chrys

Great that it went ahead and it isn't as bad as feared. Hoping you get back to normal sooner than the estimates too.
