Pleurisy

Hi I was diagnosed with pleurisy just over a week ago. I'd been getting pains at the base of my left rib , shoulder blades and chest. Also shortness of breath. Doctor gave me antibiotics and steroids the week before but they didn't help. I was sent to a+e with suspected pleurisy. I had chest xray ,ecg, lots of blood tests , urine tests, upper and lower body scan. Everything came back clear and I was diagnosed with pleurisy. I was given naproxen 250g to take morning and bedtime. How long do I need to take these for and can I just stop them or will it come back ?

Hi 68 Michelle I'm sorry that you have pleurisy. It is soooo painful and can last for ages. Naproxen is not to cure the pleurisy. It is a pain killer, which is often the only thing that helps. Antibiotics only guard against a secondary bacterial infection starting up in the lungs but won't touch the pleurisy. Pleurisy should eventually go of its own accord. If you finish the tablets and are still in pain, contact your GP about continuing with pain relief. Take it easy, be kind to yourself to give yourself the best recovery and I hope that you feel better soon.
