does anyone know about pleurisy
Hi, did the doctor Iisten to yr lungs with a stethoscope? Different conditions have different sounds for instance pleurisy has a rasping sound, made when the pleural membranes rub together. There shouldn't be a noise as they're supposed to glide smoothly.
I've just reread your post and noticed "it comes and goes". I don't recall that, it was excruciating at every breath in and movement. Luckily mine always occurred on my right side so I knew it wasn't heart related at first. I thought I'd fractured ribs because the pain is almost identical.
On reflection you need to see your GP asap especially if your pain is on the left side. Peege
Hi, I am having right chest pain also after/while having pneumonia. The doctor just said it's pneumonia but after reading online I am sure it is pleurisy. One question, I can literally only lie on my left side, lying flat on my back hurst a lot and lying onmy right also. I can get into position but any movement or a cough is excruciating. Even on my left side it's bad but I can manage to cough a little. Did you have similar experience?
I suppose it depends on which part of the lungs the pleurisy is to what's most comfortable. I only know my pleurisy was on my right lung. It’s such a long time ago now. Since the last time I had it I fractured ribs and a physiotherapist told me that it helps with the pain if you place a rolled up towel underarm on the affected side. I tried it and it most definitely did. I think you need to see another, more helpful doctor. Pleurisy can be heard through the stethoscope quite clearly, it's a rasping sound rather than the wheezyness of asthma or the crackles of an infection.
BTW I'm not a doctor
I get "pleurisy" and you are correct, it's a pain with me at the side of my lungs. However I think you doctor is probably right because when he listed to your lung noises he will know if you have pleurisy or not...Sounds are normally ' rattling or crackling.' and a blood test could follow to see what is causing the pleurisy - Might be a good idea to ask you GP, if it's not pleurisy then what is it?.
I don't think you get pleurisy there. I had it and it was awful. The pain is in either of your sides. Laying or leaning against the side that hurts alleviates it.
Have a look on-line. There's plenty in there about pleurisy. I had pneumonia which was the cause of the accompanying pleurisy. So, it was bacterial, and I had 750ml of fluid drawn from my chest cavity. Loads of antibiotics given during 10 days in hospital and for a few weeks thereafter. Your pain could be muscular in origin.
pleurisy is when there is no lubricant between the lungs and other organ but I have never heard of chest pleurisy, I only know about the lower back, it eventually gets the lubricant back and the pain stops. good luck and keep happy. tom
Hi Anthony. Usually they would do a blood test, x-ray or CT scan to diagnose pleurisy. I have had it once. The worst of it was the chest pain that got worse as I breathed. I had to lie propped up on lots of pillows. Moving about was painful. Coughing and sneezing was very painful. Did they offer an alternative diagnosis? If you had an infection recently it could be a lingering effect. I hope you feel better soon.
