Hi ,after taking a antibiotics, and prednisalone for a month ,my chest is feeling better ,but I feel so tired and sluggish as if I'm recovering from a bad illness ,I sound like a drama queen I no ,I have no energy what so ever feel like I've been dragged through the hedge ,I would like to eat yogurt after all the antibiotics I've taken now and in the past ,I have an intolerance to milk protein so yogurt is out of the question ,can anyone recommend an alternitive to yogurt something with all the good bacteria that yogurt has ,also a pick me up vitimin ect ,I am sure many of us have felt like this after a prolonged chest infection ,and no sleep through taking prednisone, there is one thing though all though I felt so poorly I still ate and ate on prednisolone, put on half a stone ,that could be the reason for sluggish, I would be interested to no what others do as a pick me up after prolonged infection

Tired and sluggish
Hi not sure what to take other than yoghurt, l am on a lot of pills for copd, type2 diabetes, heart, anxiety etc, etc. I am finally feeling the benefits of all the meds to the extent of having some more painless hrs, for a while anyway, my copd reminds me IT IS HERE, it's not going anywhere! & I feel like shit again
Also, I forgot! Most importantly! PREDNISONE will put on weight, it is a steroid! Bodybuilders use it.
It helps them build muscle a lot faster & easier, hence cheating.
My doctors won't put me on steroids as I am overweight already, it would definitely kill me, & yet it is one of the best ways to control it
Steriods do help with the inflamation ,for me they are a nightmare of a tablet ,I think the side effects from them have washed me out
I think, but I'm not sure, non dairy yogurt contains probiotics. Like the tubs of Alpro vanilla or fruit yogurt.
Last year after I was wiped out by a really bad flu virus the doctor recommended Berocca multivitamins and they did help me. I felt like I had no strength or energy at all. I took one of these at breakfast time and I felt they did give me a bit of a boost. They're expensive but I was willing to try anything and I do think they helped.
I hope you find something that helps you 💐
Thanks for this hungry ,I'm going to check out alpro ,and berocca ,dont care how much they cost I no I need something as I feel so week
I often feel very low in mood after finishing a course of steroids....it lasts a few days usually.
The infection will wipe you out too. I take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement .
There are soya yogurts which I have tried in the past, and don't know their probiotic effect though,
Chicken soup is a traditional remedy to help in recovery
You can buy probiotics in tablet form from any health food shop or online. I use Heathspan on line, free postage. All the best. X

Even Hubby this time is a Bit worried. I can't advise on intolerance to Milk Protein as I do eat plenty of Yoghurts, All my Strength has gone, even though I struggled yesterday Celebrating our Anniversary, I wanted to get home quickly. Not been able to go to my Exercise Classes for 2 weeks, I must pick myself up, like you, it's finding that Thread to make that Start. XXX
Hope you are feeling better now hacienda, I am feeling better that I did ,I think if you are on steriods more than 5days they reck you
Hi Hun, I'm much the same unfortunately, I Will have to get my positive head on, been looking after Hubby with sickness Bug for the last 5 days. So we Both are not on Par. Hoping my new Morphine kicks in soon or I'll go back on Prednisolone, They work better than this Morphine so far. Stay Well Alice, Stay Strong Hun. Love n Hugs XXX C.
I believe sauerkraut and some other fermented foods are probiotic. I have heard of yoghurt made from soy milk. It might be worth doing some online research if you are dairy intolerant. I am currently on a course of ABs and Pred. and I am doing well. The idea of of a month of it doesn't sound good though. Lets hope you get some energy back soon. Don't rush, remember you have been ill. Good luck and all the best Alice
Alpro yoghurt plain or flavoured definitely has biocultures in them. I get it from Tesco, about £1.20 a big pot. It’s a soya yoghurt kept near the soya milk.
. I also have found that my body resents stopping the steroids I was off and on them for about 3 months up to September . After this , I became much more breathless and could only walk about 8 steps. This came on gradually after the steroids stopped. The doctor put me back on 5 mg and I started to recover. I’m having to cut this down very gradually and I’m now down to 3mg, but every time I cut down ,the distance I can walk drops again. Previously I could walk for an hour, slowly without stops. I walk every day for at least 20minutes and measure my recovery by how many stops I make. Yesterday I walked for 8 minutes without stopping and 3 stops overall in my usual 20 minute route. Last week it was about 10 stops and only walking for about 1 minute at a time.
When I can do 20 minutes I’ll cut down to 2mg.
I previously had steroids for about 10 days and no reaction to stopping. But I was on them for about 6 months 2 years ago and had the same reaction. It took me 5 months to stop them completely. It’s a known withdrawal effect..
You haven’t been on the steroids for very long so it might not be a withdrawal effect. Some of the advice is about exercise. If you can manage it, it certainly helps, just some armchair exercises to begin with, then extend it. We are all different but I know that exercise helps me. Sometimes I hate doing them, but I feel better afterwards and the amount I can do improves.
Good luck.
X jo
Hello Alice
Antibiotics certainly can unbalance the body. There are various brands of probiotics ranging in cost. Brands such as Optibac, Natures aid and others are fairly easy to find. Amazon is useful if you can’t get out.
Also apart from soya yogurt you can get almond milk yogurt, made by a company called Nush, it has some probiotics and comes in natural, strawberry and blueberry. Also various coconut yogurts. Co yo, the coconut collaborative, Ko Ko. There are quite a few flavours.
Better still is Kefir, a sort of yogurt drink. Mostly made with cow or sheep’s milk, but Co yo make a coconut one. Kefir is very high in probiotics which apparently survive the digestive process better.
Some foods contain prebiotic, which apparently helps support probiotics and the digestive system in general. Foods such as garlic, onions, asparagus, apples, bananas, oats.....
Bone broth can be soothing for the digestive system, chicken or beef.
Seemingly antibiotics can effect the absorption of vitamin K1 and K2 and B vitamins also.
I have found wheatgrass , spirulina and chlorella , Sambucol helpful. The especially during exacerbation and after X Ray or scan.
But supplements of course are not suitable for everyone, depending on circumstance, medication etc .
I hope you feel better and more energetic soon Alice.
I don’t post often, but I read the posts every day and since discovering this forum I haven’t felt so afraid and alone.
Good thoughts and best wishes to you all.
I looked up Alpro yogurts, the small pots also contain yogurt cultures. For some reason I thought it was just the big tubs.
Hi Alice, how are you getting on with things? I’ve just started on a self inflicted diet of higher fibre and yogurt. I have no idea how much fibre we’re supposed to have in our diet. Hopefully it’ll make me feel renewed and invigorated. I’m waiting for the day that 2greys posts an article about research that shows a diet high in chocolate and cake is good for our health.
Lol hi hungry ,feeling better than I did ,I think you always feel tired and a bit under the weather with this illness copd,I havent got round to getting alpro yogurt yet ,but will do, 2greys is good at information isnt he ,I dont need to take fibre,at the moment I'm trying to sort out central heating so I can breath better, the heat makes me more breathless ,but all in all feeling much better thank you ,hope the same for you
