As you’ve probably discovered, it’s expensive! Cost depends on severity, stability & how many times exarcebations have occurred in a year - more than 3 & they won’t cover you at all.
This is a tricky one as you have only recently been diagnosed. We used to travel to France and Spain in our motorhome during the winter months, only for 6 to 8 weeks though. I'd been diagnosed with severe COPD 2 years before trying again to get insurance, so was able to say my condition was stable and I'd been on the same meds, including oxygen, for all that time. My first quote was about £1100! That was 9 years ago. When I picked myself up, I started phoning round and came across BIBA (British Insurance Brokers Association).
As brokers they took all my details and came back with a much more reasonable quote of £225 for both me and my husband. They were very helpful and would be a good place to start.
They will want to know all the things powderpuff mentions, as well as when you last had a chest infection, and whether you've been hospitalised in the last year.
In 2014 I was hospitalised (for 4 days) for IV antibiotics for an infection I couldn't get rid off, and that meant I couldn't get cover for anything to do with COPD for the next 12 months. We made the decision that we would go anyway with just cover for everything else but it's definitely not something I'm recommending!
I wish you the best of luck and hope you are able to get your holiday this winter.
Are you a member of the Caravan & Motörhome club jabber? I’m a caravaner & use their Red Pennant European travel insurance, it’s excellent if things should go wrong & the only 2 health issues they need to know is about a terminally ill dx or if the insured are having any cancer treatment - no other exemptions.
The main advice would be shop around for insurance but do not risk going without if you are going abroad. I usually have to change travel insurance every year but have not claimed at all on any company so far. Since my diagnosis in 2009. I am with world First insurance this year who knows which one next year.
Thanks for your advice, Katieox60, Will see how things pan out, Waiting on a pacemaker op to start with, Anytime now, so they said, Hope your week goes well, BRIAN
Beware many insurers charge a bomb if your under a consultant, waiting for treatment, or treatment changed in the last few months. OK if your going in UK but not abroad. Take care
Thanks for taking the time to reply. We always have that problem anyway. Cause i have. Chronic Kidney Disease. So seen every 6 months. These 2 problems the last 2 months. Will just make it harder to get insurance i guess. But we keep Smiling. Lol. Hope you have a good day
I used MIA travel. I told them everything including 3 x hospital admissions. I have IPF. It cost me £71 for 1 week coverering everything to Sweden. Tel no 0800 999 3333
Thanks Tweetie 13, Always shop around anyway, This is all new to me, only diagnosed 3 weeks ago, Already a severe obstruction, so my results and doctor says, But staying positive and having a laugh gets me through the day. Brian
Hi Bingo88. I have asthma, bronchiectasis, epilepsy, and several other illnesses, I have been to France twice and used Staysure insurance. They have been really good, affordable and helpful. I would recommend you give them a try.
Thanks Patchpoppy2, We are with them on our Annual policy at present, But 2 more conditions to add now, Never know how good they are till you have to claim, Thanks again for your reply, Hope you have a good week too, BRIAN
hi, i have bullous emphysema and this may was recovering from pulmonary embolus, my husband had a heart attack(more than 9 years ago) we use travelinsurance4medical. we go to turkey for 21-22 days every may and cost us approx £118.00 the proviso is that if possible i go to the local hospital not the private one. Now i'm not sure if this is just in turkey, as the private hospitals are renowned for inflating costs with tests, scans etc that are not required. Not a problem as state hosp in marmaris as good as private one
Thanks for that info dmf64, Hope your weeks good, And you both have plenty more hols together, Should think all eu countries have decent treatment hospitals, Costa Blanca, where we like to go, As an excellent hospital at Torrevieja, South of Alicante, Thanks for your info, Many thanks BRIAN
I went with medical travel insurance compared £114.00 for a week been on oxygen, no hospital stays and one chest infection and 4 medicines. Normal insurance companies £300 to £500 for week.
