Yes, they do work. While they are not a panacea, they definitely help free up mucus in the lungs so you can cough it up and out. While there are various types, I use the Aerobika as it was provided me in the hospital to aid in my recovery from a very serious exacerbation. All Best Wishes, judg69
I use a flutter, it was prescribed by my doctor following advice from the lady who does my lung function tests.
I would suggest asking your doctor before you buy one. They are good for some people but not others.
You don’t mention your lung disease and whether you have a lot of mucous production. If you do produce phlegm then the Flutter valve could be very helpful. However, if the phlegm is sticky and thick ie hard to cough up then look for a mucolytic to thin it down. This will help you to make better use of the device. My OH has had a Flutter for many years and it has been extremely useful. He has asthma/bronchiectasis and produces lots of sputum. He also finds Aerosure PEP device very good.
Hi Nell I use a flutter valve it was prescribed by my doctor, and I think they work very well. Good luck with one take care 😊 Bernadette
Hi i have bronciextacis and emphcemia, i use a acopelo device and this works realy well for me
The respiratory physio at the hospital suggested acapella was best for people with emphysema, it something I need to speak to my GP about. Do you find it easy to use? I was wondering if it takes a lot of effort.
Very easy to use and you dont need to be sitting up straight so easier when im not well. i realy like mine
that's great thanks corriena, its when I am unwell that I need something to help, I shall speak with my doc or respiratory nurse about getting one. Many thanks
I've used both a flutter and a lung flute, and the lung flute was far superior. The flutter works by using pressure to splint open your bronchioles while the flute works on sound waves. Why is that important? Because sound waves can travel deeper into your lungs than the pressure from a flutter device.
Not only does it go deeper than a flutter, it does so with less effort from you. When you're using a flutter, you're trying to move a small metal ball within the device with your breath. When you're using a lung flute, you're simply making a sound with a reed. It's much easier. I would highly recommend it. They're so effective, I have a spare in case my original should break.
My flutter device has helped me immensely. I have asthma and bronchiectasis, when I get clogged up, I use my flutter and it helps me to bring the gunk up. Hope this helps x
Yes a flutter is an invaluable device to add to your tool kit. It made a significant difference to my ability to clear mucus.
I asked my doctor for one and he said they no longer prescribe them as they can cause an pneumothorax
These devices are a bit like Marmite! You either love or hate them. Personally I did not find they helped. But many people do. Our various conditions affect each of us so differently that at times you need to find what works for you.
Great device,M really helps to get mucus up without much effort.
