Hi I wonder if anyone could help. I got sent for a chest x-ray 2 weeks ago and went for results to GO today, she told me I have COPD but gave me no information or advice except to say that if I got short of breath she will give me inhalers. I am totally shocked and it has just really hit me now. x

Hi
It’s normally a Spirometer test to determine if you have COPD. X-Rays are usually to rule out any other conditions. To be left in limbo is not best practice and disrespectful. I would request a second appointment to discuss the results in more detail
Hello Kittyjack . 😊
It's quite unbelievable that you haven't had a spirometry test? I'm not quite sure what the basis of her conclusion was exactly. It actually took a while to get a firm diagnosis on my condition. I remember doing six minute walk tests, spirometry tests, CT scans, all sorts of things until until I was thoroughly sick of it.
You need to find out more, go back and ask her. And if you can, could you get a second opinion? I went for three opinions. Just to be sure.
I know this is so hard and incredibly frustrating, especially when no help, advice or plan is offered. It's difficult for sure, but to a certain extent you have to be your own advocate. Please let us know how things go. I hope you find answers.
Warm wishes,
Cas xx 🌸
I totally agree with the previous replies. How they have come to this diagnosis without further tests is frankly ridiculous.
Agree with these 3 replies so far. Lots more tests to Determine if you do have COPD. She sounds like a ! Quack" a lot of these Too quick to Diagnose Doctors around, we are reading & seeing them on the News. Thank goodness I have the Best Lung Consultant who I was referred to by my Knowledgeable GP...Please go Back & Confront her or Change your GP a.s.a.p. Good Luck. xxx

Hi, sounds like you need to change you GP, COPD needs looking after to try to keep it from getting too bad. Likely you'll find that you will run short of breath on a regular basis, you need meds to help you thro'. Unfortunately it cannot be cured but there are treatments out there that could help, some may cost as they are only available privately, but some you can get thro' NHS. Lung transplants, lung reduction, lung coils/valves. You must be prepared to do some research to find hospitals that carry out this type of operation. Please don't just leave it lungs are very precious and cannot be messed with. If needs be go to another GP for 2nd opinion.

Many thanks Keith I am going to see what the COPD nurse has to say on Tuesday and take it from there but I will also take your kind advice you gave. I have been looking on line for more information and I do get short of breath when I do my housework and such so thank you very much for your most appreciated advice

Hi again, The info on the web can often scare you witless so be very careful what you read, it's often far worse than it really is. Please don't take too much notice each person is different and the web can put the frighteners on. Always discuss your problems with a professional that has details of you or can get them. If needs be get a 2nd opinion with another GP or privately (This will cost)

Yes Redsocks its very scary i have a lot of questions to ask the COPD nurse on Tuesday i am still in total shock x
COPD nurses in the UK get extra and intensive ongoing training in the lung diseases under the COPD umbrella. In this respect, they have a far more in-depth knowledge about complex lung issues than any GP has the time for. All our nurses have university degrees in nursing and their duties go far beyond just 'nursing' these days. The GP's will defer to the specialist knowledge of these respiratory nurses.
Hi red it was my GP who diagnosed the COPD and the nurse will help me with any problems I have to face and as what to do x
Don’t be to alarmed I got it when I was 49 64 coming up still alive and kicking bless yar x
Thank you Ali x
