Confused by what vitamins &/or supplements are best for COPD

I've been taking Vitamin d3 with k2(mk7) as suggested but I've been researching other vitamins as well, e.g. magnesium and supplements e.g. probiotics, and I've spent hours and hours surfing the net for best combinations and getting way too carried away with it all.

Can I ask what combination of d3 + k2(mk7) is a regular daily dose? My vitamin d levels were low and I was prescribed a very high dose for a couple of months but now need advice on a maintenance dose. (You'd think I wouldn't need it in Spain but I actually spend little time outside.) I also understand that a magnesium supplement and maybe a probiotic might be good??

All experience much appreciated as I do have a tendency to go over the top on the old pill-popping side of things ;-)

Thanks. Mx

Hi, my go to guide is The Pocket Guide To Vitamins by Angela Dowden, a well know nutritionist & writer. It includes supplements, indication, contra-indications, doses etc. it's about £7, less on Amazon and I've also got an inexpensive Kindle version.

I take daily: 25micrograms (1000iu) vit D3, 75micrograms of K2 (Mk7 is the purest, most active & safe form of vit K so well done you), 375mg magnesium.

At the moment I'm taking 20 billion of live culture (from 5 strains) probiotic because I've been mostly unwell since Xmas with too many antibiotics. Normally I'll take 5billion of only 2 strains

Hope this helps. P.

I should have mentioned, I don't have copd.

Hi Peege.

That's hugely helpful. May I ask which form of magnesium do you take? Also, I don't know if naming manufacturers is permitted on this site (if not I would really appreciate you private messaging) but it would help tremendously if you could let me know what makes and where from for them all.

I will definitely get that book.

Thanks so much for your time. Mx

I too get virtually no sun. I take:

100micrograms (4000iu) vit D3, 15micrograms of K2 (Mk7) as suppliments daily, my magnesium and potassium I get from eating a banana every day.

Thanks so much. I too have a banana every day. Does that provide enough magnesium?

Hope all is moving along for you re the radiation treatment. I think about you a lot and how you may be feeling. I'm always anxious before my 6 monthly check ups. I know where I am with the emphysema but I'm always concerned that cancer could easily grow in my so badly damaged lungs.

Wishing you well. Mx

Yes, a large banana a day does the job and of course is one of your 5 a day (I think they have now changed it to 7 a day). I am the same, in that I know where I am with emphysema, but this cancer malarky is a different ball game altogether. I am still waiting for an appointment to come through, I will be chasing them up at the end of this week if I still have not heard. Still holding myself together, sort of.

Hi,

This is a link to all the cofactors of Vitamin D. Without them your body may not efficiently absorb Vitamin D. So maybe one of the cofactors may be down. Magnesium is one of the cofactors. A hair analysis is good for determining your mineral balances, such as magnesium and calcium, but doesn't show your vitamin levels. Some doctors and naturopaths do the hair analysis. There should be some in Spain who do this. All the best.

I don't know much about the others, but definitely would recommend Vit D. My doctor found that I had very low levels and, like you, I was put on a high dose then carried on with an over-the-counter supplement for a while. I have since been put on AdCal which has Vit D. Since taking it, my overall health has improved greatly and I have had fewer chest infections and no colds. I admit I avoid people with colds whenever possible but this winter have been in contact with several people who have told me too late that they are unwell and still didn't catch it. Neither has my husband since he started taking Vit D. I wouldn't have believed it could make such a difference but I'm sure that's what's done it. xx Moy

What are you like!! Only 6 degrees here at the moment, and rapidly falling. Have to keep the heating on all day and no heating allowance to pay for it! Spain, as you know, is a cold country with a hot sun, so when there's no sun and that 'beast from the east' gale force wind that you lot kicked down our way, it feels bloody cold.

Your humour though has really warmed up my cockles. :-)

PS feed the poor cat something better than pot noodles.

Hi Michelle

I take natecal D prescribed by my consultant as I am on a daily low dose deflazacort (steroid). I use probiotic capsules often but mainly when on antibiotics. The farmacias here recommend taking probiotics during a course of antibiotics.

I also look for ideas on ways to improve or help me to feel better. Don't get out much either lol. Will hopefully warm up soon with Spring on the way.

Then we will say its too hot and humid. X 😏

Hi there! and thanks for your reply.

Yes, I was told to take Ultra Levura capsules when on ABs - mainly to prevent diarrhoea (not sure I've spelt that right!) - but wondered whether I should take something on a daily basis to keep my gut happy!

Lovely to see the sun out today and the beautiful blue skies back, but wind is still jolly chilly. You're right though, it won't be long I'm sure before I'm hiding inside with the air-conditioning on full pelt.

Nice to be in touch with someone on the coast. Hope you're feeling well.
