Went to er last nite.

I had a racing heart and sob after doing duo nebs and could barely talk. The oxygen in the ambulance helped and calmed it down a lot. My chest xray and ct scan were fine. The er doctor just thought tachycardia and that it was tachycardia and albuterol that made it go out of control. However, i read that tachycardia is part of an asthma attack. Thoughts? He didnt seem to know how to treat an asthma attack. Since i wasnt wheezing " i was fine" . Thank god my gp today could clearly see what was wrong and has made adjustments to my meds. In fact, my breathing wasnt evaluated at all at the er, just my oxygen which was fine. Im mystified by my experience.

I have asthma/ COPD so I know how you must be feeling.....many times I have been told that I am fine because my O2 levels are OK and I have little wheeze........but I still can't breathe properly with a tight constricted chest . One doctor remarked when I gasped out that I couldn't breathe said ' well yes you are' ......very helpful.

Salbutamol/ Albuterol can make my heart race, as does anxiety , as does struggling to get a breath in and out.....but no matter what reason my pulse is still high...another doctor told me to go to A and E when that happens.

I find my Peak Flow reading is the best indicator on how my asthma is, did they test yours, though sometimes trying to do a peak flow when you are struggling is near impossible .

I also practice gentle, belly breathing when I can, and I try the Pursed Lip Breathing technique first to try and get control. Also I find Buteyko Breathing helpful , but that is not suitable for everyone ...you need to check.

Can you ask your GP for a written plan on what do do in an asthma attack, and how to help prevent one.

Best wishes, I hope you get some relief soon.

They did not test my peak flow reading when I was there. He was convinced it wasnt from asthma even though i told him my number was 250 and probably way under that when I couldnt speak. My heart raced really high and my bp went way up. It was horrible. I am being referred to a cardiologist and now taking a beta blocker(my heart started racing again yesterday). So we can see if it was truly my heart or maybe both. Im just glad my doctor yesterday changed my meds yesterday and my peak flow was 350 this morning. It is never that high first thing.

Hi patish6 , I am glad your medication has kicked in now, but it's a worry when an a and e doctor doesn't seem to understand asthma and didn't do a peak flow measure. My O2 level can be reasonable even when I am struggling to breathe...I have told various health professionals about it .

Two of my friends are asthmatic and suffer from palpitations , one is seeing her GP this week for advice.
