Whooping cough

Has anyone had whooping cough as an adult? I have very mild asthma and have had whooping cough for about 3 weeks. Have been to the GP 4 times because the coughing makes me feel like I'm suffocating and I vomit after every attack. Theyve said my chest is clear, oxygen levels are 99% and just to wait it out which could take upto 10 weeks! Is there truly nothing that can suppress this kind of violent coughing attack or speed up the recovery?

(I don't feel like my asthma is flaring but I did try taking ventolin to see if that would help but it made it so much worse!)

Maybe try a pharmacist? Had it when I was 15, so a very long time ago. I remember mum boiling kettles for humidity then I had a Wrights or Vicks humidifier as well. There are newer versions of the Vicks one, I just googled, but I didn't have asthma then so would double check if it's ok to use one first. Hope you feel better soon. xx

Thank you so much for this suggestion. The relief from the humidifier was amazing (I just got one that only uses water) and have been able to get an hour or two of sleep at a time which has really helped me cope this week 😀

You're right to ask tips here, there'll be some more replies in the week I'm sure.I cant imagine how awful it must be. An acquaintance has it. She's elderly, in hospital and has two broken ribs from the coughing and really quite poorly. Its pretty shocking that whooping cough nowadays.

You could ring the helpline on Monday 9.15 -5pm, Mon to Fri 0300 222 5800. They may be able to advise. I do hope it clears up soon & you suffer less.

I think I’ve had if and still suffering with it but it’s not been confirmed. It has been horrible and I did end up with a chest infection too. My chest is clear now apparently but I’m still coughing intermittently and my ribs etc are sore.

There are a number of infections floating around the population at present. Both my wife and daughter had a long term cough that took months to finally disappear. Simple lintus helped.

Hope you find something to soothe your poor throat; it sounds totally exhausting. Best wishes.

Sorry to hear you have picked up this awful disease and sorry that you cant get any help with it. I would try a humidifier as Im sure it will help. The only thing you can do is to make up some honey lemon and ginger to ease the coughing. I really feel for you as it must be so awful coughing so badly you are sick x

I had it 6/7 years ago and funnily enough it was the final straw with smoking for me (I had already been making alot of progress with cutting down significantly). It lasted along time for me also - remember it was historically called the 100 day cough. It’s a rough dose for sure. There’s quite a but if it around for the last decade or so is my understanding
