Off To The Doctors...

Went to see the Doctor this afternoon and had a long chat about inhalers and nebulisers and that sort of thing...he's asked for an appointment for me with the Consultant sooner rather than later 'cos he thinks this retention thing with the nightmares etc. is getting beyond a joke...he's the very first to admit knowing little about COPD...in fact he said that he feels I know more about than he does, so I told him about the forum and he was pleased there is such a source in place.

He's prescribed saline for the nebuliser...to be honest I think he wanted to do something to help and that was simple enough...I asked him for it mind you. And some high-falutin pain killers for when I get the horrible headaches in the morning...another symptom of the retention. I didn't ask for those though.

Then he showed me the latest photo of his dog on his 'phone...complained about Christmas creeping up...handed me an armful of repeat prescriptions and told me to mind myself...

Himself took the 'scripts into the pharmacy...when we arrived home I realised they'd not put the emergency pack in so 'phoned and asked Lawrence...he's Welsh and knows the house my ex in-laws lived in...they didn't live in Wales though. By the time Lawrence has asked the Indian girl, who I could hear in the background saying there was no emergency meds on the prescription, and then Patrick who is the chief Pharmacist joined in, and it was decided they'd fax the surgery and ask for the emergency pack please, then Himself can pick it up tomorrow...Lawrence's Welsh accent is more pronounced over the 'phone and he was beginning to sound like Peter Sellers pretending to be Indian...the Indian girl, whose name I can't spell but can say when I speak to her, has an Irish accent and Patrick is just Patrick...

No-one ever understands me 'cos I talk in a cut glass English accent which is a bit of a blow to those who think I speak with an Irish accent...I always have to repeat myself over and over again...especially while on the 'phone.

So all in all I'm not much further forward...

He's actually an excellent Doctor who has that rare ability to simply sit and listen...he never makes me feel like an eejit for being worried about something either...mind you...he's young, probably be a different story when he's old and grumpy!

Oh Vashti, you just spoiled one of my illusions, a cut glass English accent? I've always imagined you with a lovely, rich, Irish brogue.

Thank you very much!

Oh Vashti's - I so love your posts & I really need to be cheered up at the moment after losing my husband almost four weeks ago. Also, rotten timing, I had to have one of my cats put to sleep a week ago It was expected & he was sixteen but still came as a blow. I like to think he's up there sitting on Mike's lap . Please keep you posts coming . Love Helen .x

Oh, Helen...please have a virtual hug from me.

I once saw a really lovely little video...like realistic cartoon characters...of people going into Heaven and meeting up with their pets. Your old cat is probably purring his head off on Mike's lap...

Your Doctor sounds nice Vashti, in Ireland do you get free prescriptions like here in Wales? It's funny but I already thought you had an english accent 😁 my accent tends to change depending on who I'm talking to 😁 I can't help it lol ! 😄😜😊

in reply to hufferpuffer

He's lovely... always has time to listen. We do have almost free prescriptions...we pay a nominal amount...about €1 for each medication.

I know what you mean about the accents...I can do a perfect Roscommon accent when speaking to someone local...lol

At least your GP admits to what he does/doesn't know - too many don't! A GP is just that - a General Practitioner. They know a little about a lot of illnesses, but not a lot about any one in particular. Admittedly, most did specialise before choosing to going in to GP, and when you get one who understands your illness, it's a bonus.

Love the description of all the accents - I could almost hear them while I was reading it.? Lol XX

in reply to Nikkers

He's perfectly honest about knowing little about COPD...actually much more reassuring in a way than being convinced he's an expert. He's brilliant...always willing to simply listen and ready to push the Consultant for an appointment if he's a bit concerned...

Now that you have totally shattered my illusions of how you sound Vashti........I suppose you will be telling me next that you are not tall, blond and willowy!

Hope you get all the meds you need and wish you well as always. xxxx
