I've been taking it for about a month now and I seem to be hacking up gunk more - which I think is good because I'm getting it out of my body. I have stage 2 copd with emphysema.

HI there! Terry from denver here -- Has anyone had any experience with the supplement NAC? N-Acetyl Cysteine 500 mg
Good Morning, My husband suffers with severe COPD - he did take this supplement and it did seem to help him BUT he has had problems with stomach ulcers and he had to stop taking it as it aggravated his stomach! Good Luck TAD xx
Theres study today reported re copy and nac in copd news. Helps. I just got some thanks. X
Been taking this for a while now, it used by a fair few of COPD sufferers and I think it does a good job of assisting the immune system. Lots of people on this site take it.
I have taken NAC for 6 mths and find it reduced my cough I have Asthma and IPF. I first heard about it on the Patients Like Me forum it is a USA site and are advised to take it by their consultant as there is no other treatment for the desease. I took 600ml at first and have just seen a second consultant who has suggested the drug Pirfenidone which has recently been licensed for use. But for the next 3 mths I have been given NAC while I decide if I want Pirfenidone since taking the 1800ml a day I have coughed up mucus which is usually difficult for me but I think it must be better out than in. So I suggest you carry on there are despersible tablets that are kinder to the stomach. So good luck terry!
I am taking NAC 500 for my IPF. Its an immune suppressant and I have heard that it is supposed to help with the mucus as well. I haven't had any issues with it and have been taking it for the past 1,5-2 years
NAC doesn't suppress immune system function, it improves it: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/186...
Don't think the heading in that link "post menapausul women would sound very helpful I read one which referred to NAC as beneficial to Respitary desease but can't remember where but PLM forum do have topic on NAC .
The point of that link was NAC's effect on the immune system, the fact that PM women were studied is irrelevant.
NAC is indeed beneficial in respiratory disease, and there are many sites dealing with that specifically, for example, everydayhealth.com/copd/new...
thank you, xxx, ive googled nac, looks ok for me to take,
I take 1800mg/day. A few people may experience nausea with it.

You obviously have more knowledge than me I wasn't making a point its because I'm new at this and was just thinking it could confuse Terry. Sorry
I was responding to Catiosha saying NAC was an immune suppressant (which it isn't). It hadn't occurred to me Terry might be confused by it. You could be right, in which case our exchange will have cleared that up.
Allow me to point out that if you are responding to a specific post rather than to the subject in general, then by clicking on the 'Reply to this' box beneath the post in question your response can appear indented below that post, as is my response to you here.

Terry, interesting replies you have here, I've not tried it but think I shall do a little research if it will support the immune system - every little helps! P
ps if you put NAC etc in the search above you'll get some old posts/replies on the subject
