I had a very bad chest infection for 6 weeks was on doxycycline 500 for two weeks alongside prednisone steroids for 6 weeks I have been put on Montelukast 10mg once a night for 8 weeks been on them 9 days and have the following side effects, flu like symptoms also with sore limbs, sore glands, headaches, nausea, stomach cramps, occasional vomiting. I’ve decided to give it till Thursday and see how I feel then contact surgery, breathlessness has got slightly better.

Has anyone else had experience of Montelukast.

Happy new year to everyone x

The symptoms you describe could very well be the side effects of Montelukast, but they could be a virus. Definitely discuss with your prescribing doctor and they can monitor your withdrawal of Montelukast and treat the symptoms if they turn out to be a virus.

It does sound like you have some type of a virus. I have been on Montelukast for a few years now with no side effects. Maybe it is just coincidence that the two happened at the same time? I could be wrong, and medications could affect each person differently….but the symptoms you are describing sounds more like a flu or some type of virus. When in doubt, I would discuss it with my doctor.

I've been on montelukast for years with no known side effects but of course everyone is different, my personal problem is doxycycline. My GP always starts off with the lowest dose possible and then almost begrudgingly increases over a couple of weeks until it eventually clears things up for me, next time it happens I'm going to ask for a stronger dose immediately or to try another antibiotic as I don't have a lot of faith in doxycycline or maybe my GP!!

I’ve been on Montelukast for about two years. I tried it initially one Spring but it gave terrible headaches. Started taking it again about 11 months.

The headaches have stopped but it gave me awful dreams/nightmares because it’s recommend to take it at night. So now I take it in the morning and it doesn’t seem to have any nasty side effects. However, nor do I notice any difference in my Cough Variant Asthma.

Perhaps go and see a doctor (another one at the Practice) or an asthma nurse - I assume you are asthmatic? We all react differently to medication.

thank you, I’m beginning to think I got a virus after having a horrible chest infection, I’m probably very run down so just resting and taking my inhalers and paracetomal, I am persevering with Montelukast.

I have been on Montelukast for over 25 years with no side effects 👍 Initially they were for night time coughing. Other than infections, my coughing & asthma are well controlled. I noticed a few people said that they experienced headaches? I've not had that problem.
