no better on montelukast

Has anyone had montelukast and seen no benefits? I was told there was a good chance it doesnt always work when my 2 year old son started it a month ago. He was also on a trial of either montelukast or placebo for 6 months before with no improvement. He had a dna test to check his likeliness to respond as part of the trial with barts in london but we dropped out after 6 months as the hcp wanted to give the definite montelukast a full time trial. I am going to ask if we can find out early or if we have to wait until next january.

We really havent seen a positive change and he had to have a weeks course of prednisolone despite the montelukast. The only change it madr has been in his behaviour although it obviously may be a huge coincedence but he has gone from a very placid easy going boy to a very aggressive child so suddenly. They have suggested that as there hasnt been an improvement after a month we can stop until his next review in two weeks and see if his behaviour improves.

Anyone had similar where it hasnt helped? Im partly hoping his behaviour is a side effect as it is awful but at the same time I want to give this a fair crack at working in case it might help. (we are that desperate!)

Hi,

Is this the Montekulast granules? My daughter has taken them since she was 18 months old (she is now turning three) but it was only recently that we turned a corner in her medication. She is on quite a cocktail of medication to treat her asthma, but we seem to have finally found the right mix. I would say the steroids are definitely the reason for your son's behaviour swings. My daughter changed dramatically on the prednisolone.

My son is 2.5 years old and has been taking the montelukast granules for just over 3 weeks now and to be honest we haven't seen much improvement. His brown inhaler was also increased to 3 puffs twice a day at the same time. He is still wheezy most days mostly in late afternoon/evenings and night times so we are giving ventolin a couple of times a day. We always find that our son changes when he is on prednisolone he becomes very hyperactive and temperamental. Is your son on any other medications?

His consultant has taken him off the montelukast tablets until his review (that wil be two weeks off) to see if he gets any worse.

He was off for a few days and he got a temperature but nothing much came of it other than needing more ventolin. His allergy symptoms are slightly worse though so maybe the montelukast was helping although he was still coughing and needing his ventolin. So could the montelukast help with the allergies but not so much with the coughing and wheezing as he was still needing daily ventolin on them? I am assuming he will go back on the montelukast after the review to confirm this.

I think the behaviour was probably pred related as he is much more himself now.

What a kerfuffle this boy is! He is on 400mcg clenil a day, ventolin variable but daily, cetirizine twice a day and then obviously the montelukast tablets. He also takes supplements for his dairy free diet.

Has your son had allergy testing? I was considering paying privately for this as I get repeatedly asked by doctors what sets off his breathing problems. I have tried to work out what makes him worse but I am not finding it easy. At his hospital appointment yesterday the doctor did say she may refer him for allergy testing but also wants him seen by an ENT specialist and a respiratory nurse. They would like him seen by ENT as he has large tonsils and want to check for adenoids as he is a noisy breather when he is sleeping.

We will be talking about allergy testing with his consultant next week. His resp nurse is pushing it as it does seem to play a huge role with his asthma. We are confident with the common ones dust mites, pollen and cat fur just from experience, but it woukd be intereting to see what else if anything.

I hope your son can get it done as like you said it might just help.

HI, my son used to be on montelukast and I refuse to put him back on it. He went on it from a very young age about one. His behaviour was abnormal, he would look past you like you werent there. He would wake in the night screaming he was a very different child. Thought he may have had other problems, cant remember it all know. However the day came when there was a stockist problem and we couldnt get hold of the med. It went on for about 3 months. In that time Adams behaviour completely changed, he became a different child. I read into the medication and some of the side effects are helusanations, depression, anxiety. I refused to put him back on it regardless what the doctors said. My little boy is completely changed, I havent looked back

That is quite scary Hannah. Did the montelukast help despite the side effects? Also did they offer anything else other than the montelukast?
