Hi all , has anyone been given doxycycline antibiotics? I have a sinus infection so back on the steroids and doctor gave me doxycycline instead of amoxicillin. What side effect have you experienced and do they clear it up ? Thanks x
Doxycycline : Hi all , has anyone been... - Asthma Community ...
Doxycycline
I had Doxycycline in May for my chest infection. I must admit, it didn't work and I ended up on Clarithromycin. There weren't any side effects. Have you tried a sinus rinse for your sinuses? I got a Sinugator from NeilMed and I must admit that it has made a massive difference. Whenever my sinuses get bad, I use it daily and it does help clear up my sinuses more quickly. The first time I used it I had headaches because some of the water got trapped in my blocked sinuses, but I persevered, and I am glad I did. I think this alone has transformed my life from one attached to a box of tissues every day of my life to one where only need them when I am ill. Anyway, it worked for me. Good luck and hope you feel better soon. x

Thank you for your reply , I have bought a rinse kit , so going to try it today after looking at them for a while , so I bought one off Amazon , it came yesterday. I can always tell when I'm getting an infection as I start with a very mucusy cough and sinus headache , not to mention all the phlegm that comes away . I know it's my sinus , but I also have nasal polyps, would the rinse help get rid of them too ? X
Hi Honey, just had a course of Doxycycline, for sinus infection, no side effects, improved till last day of the antibiotic, then rapidly down hill that day with exacerbation, and next day on prednisone and on another course of Doxycycline..........will be back at the dr again on Monday! And probably a third antibiotic, and if so, has to be a different one.
Oh I hope you improve Hun , it's awful when you feel so bad , and very scary . My doctor always gives me Amoxicillin, clears it up and steroids, but saw another doctor and he gave me the doxycycline. Would rather have had Amoxicillin. I'm not very good with other antibiotics. I'll try see my own doctor tomorrow if I don't feel any better. X
Hi I always take doxycycline as I am allergic to penicillan. I take them for chest infections though and they are usually very effective for me. We are all different though but it is a good ab.
Do you have any side effects lilaclil ? X
No not at all. It might be because my body is used to them. The main side effect I should think would be stomach ache as this is common with ab's. If you get this then take the pill with some natural yoghurt as this should help.
Oh and I always get thrush afterwards which is a pain - literally!
Oh yes I always get thrush , which I agree is truly painful. I'll get some yogurt tomorrow. Thanks Hun . X
Must be natural yoghurt. But it might not affect you so you might not need it. It's delicious though isn't it? xx
Yes it is , I will get some anyway , I like yoghurt anyway. My stomach always suffer with any antibiotics. X
I am currently on Doxycycline antibiotics for a chest infection. I have not experienced any side effects.
I hope you start to feel better soon.
Yes I've had Doxycycline several times and have found them to be very good
I've had doxy on many occasions and also as a prophylactic antibiotic due to my condition. I can't say I have ever had a side effect with this. The main stipulation is staying protected from strong uv rays, which if you live in Britain shouldn't prove too much of a problem
We have very occadionally taken them when we have travelled to malarial areas, as a preventative, as my DH can't take ordinary malaria meds and the risk of taking lariam felt too great. I can't say we ever had any problems.......though it is of course debatable if using it for malaria prevention is wise use.
If you have a viral infection antibiotics are not going to work .
I was on doxycycline when I caught syphilis and there were no side effects .
I have COPD, I have a chest infection now and was prescribed doxycycline, took the first 2 tablets this morning and 30 minutes later I was sick and threw them up, usually I am given amoxicilin but for some reason she gave me the doxycyline this time, after I was sick I phoned my doctor up and told her they had made me sick, now I am back on the amoxicilin.
The vast majority of chest infections are viruses which antibiotics will do nothing (or very little) for. Doxycycline is a good antibiotic if the infection is bacterial.
Antibiotics that belong to the macrolides group are often good for bacterial chest infections (for example Clarythromycin).
Be aware that Asthma Symtoms very often include Mucus Production which can have nothing to do with a chest infection (bacterial or virus) but are simply a symptom of the inflammation of the airways resulting from Asthma.
Very often, Antibiotics are prescribed by GPS to Asthma suffers 'not' because of any current infection, but because the patient is taking (or is about to take) a course of oral steroid tablets. Oral Steroid tablets can temporarily weaken a patient's immune response - thus antibiotics are considered warranted by some GPS when simultaneously prescribing oral steroids, in order to 'prevent' a new infection resulting from the temporary weakening of the immune system (as a result of the prescribing of the oral steroid tablets).
