Rheumatoid, methotrexate and antiobiotics

For anyone on methotrexate (presently or in the past), if you've had infections what antibiotics have you been prescribed?

My sister has a UTI (symptoms only started today) but she took her methotrexate last night, and she's been prescribed nitrofurantoin but there's so much conflicting information that I can't tell whether it is safe or not.

Anyone got any experience?

Nitrifuratonin is perfectly safe with Methoteexate, there are no interactions. You are advised to stop MTX whilst on antibiotics, and wait till 48hrs after ABs finish, before restarting.

Thanks so much for replying. I was worried about toxicity as she had her weekly methotrexate dose last night so it's already in her system for a week(ish)

I wouldn’t stress, although it’s weekly, it has a half life of 5-8hrs, which means that the dose is out the system after around 55hrs. Unless her liver enzymes are already at the top or out of range I wouldn’t worry. She should just hold off next dose till 48hrs after ABs finished

Hi, I take methotrexate injection 20mg once a week for my psoriasis on a Sunday night and take folic acid as well but I don't take folic acid on Sunday and Monday just Tuesday to Saturday and I've found that it is very good for my psoriasis but for the pain it does nothing to help me with that, I hope this information helps you .
