feelings of unreality ?: why do you get the... - Anxiety Support
feelings of unreality ?
Hi Donna,
Yes, I get this too. I have patches when I feel so disconnected it's like watching myself through a glass. It especially happens in social situations - I can even be talking and laughing while feeling like I'm watching someone else. Very disconcerting. I have really vivid, lucid dreams too, especially about work. Sometimes I'm not sure whether things have actually happened or if I've dreamt them. Leads to some interesting conversations - lol!!!
I'm reliably reassured by lots of people on here that this is a part of the anxiety and it will go away.
I'll be thrilled when it does!!!!
Hope you feel better soon.
Love and best wishes,
Lizard.x

Hi.blonde. Haven't spoken before so welcome. Unreality in nervous illness is one of the most upsetting of all symptoms. In fact it is something that can precipitate people into nervous illness. But it is, like many others, a symptom. You are NOT going mad I can assure you. This symptom is so common it is to be expected in any sufferer from nerves. But, as you say, it is frightening. Vivid dreams are caused by anxiety also. When we sleep the unconscious takes over and tries to tell us something about our life, that in consciousness, when awake, we may not want to face. So if you can remember them write your dreams down and look at them. You may learn something about yourself that will be useful in your recovery. In any case I am sure you will find them interesting. Oh yes!! You WILL recover. Many on this site have been through what you are going through and have recovered, so take heart. This is an EXPERIENCE that can help or hinder your way forward. It depends how you take it. If you fear "IT" and panic you put yourself in the vicious circle of panic-fear-panic. Sit down when you feel panic. Take deep breaths, let it them out slowly, let your body slump in the chair and ACCEPT how you feel. Stop FIGHTING and STRUGGLING. You can't win that one and just use up valuable energy. Many other ways there are and you have to make your own choice, But acceptance helped me recover. Good luck. jonathan.
