What could be causing this extreme fatigue. I’m worried that it’s something bad.

Hi Speechpat,

Mental conditions such as Anxiety and depression both have features of tiredness/lethargy/fatigue.

Provided your doctor has ruled out any other physical causes through tests, the culprit is anxiety and or depression. The key thing is to trust and accept this is the case. Often anxiety goes into overdrive thinking the worst.

A good article for reference is " Everything You Need to Know About Tiredness Caused by Anxiety" located in the link below

Great article. Thanks for sharing. I had blood tests done yesterday to check thyroid and iron levels. Will get results tomorrow. I know I could benefit from suggestions in the article. Just hard to get moving.

An Underactive Thyroid / Hypothyroidism.

The most common cause is;

Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroiditis

There is no cure for Hashimoto's but the Hypothyroidism that it causes us treated with lifelong, daily Thyroxine replacement medication, usually Levothyroxine.

This is usually started at a low dose and increased gradually after repeat blood tests over several months. Then regular checks should be made for life.

Some people also need to take replacement T3 as well as LT4 because they are poor converters and still have low FreeT3 despite being on adequate Levothyroxine (LT4).

It's very important that FreeT3 is tested as well as TSH, FreeT4 and TT4 (Total T4).

With Hashimoto's, the regular Thyroid Function blood tests can fluctuate. So it's helpful if symptoms are also taken into consideration by the doctor when adjusting dose. Therefore it's always a good Idea to take a list of symptoms in to the doctor's office .

NB

It's important to have Adrenal Function tested before starting Levothyroxine if necessary.
