I have struggled with social anxiety for a long time but only realised what it was 2 years ago. Since coming to uni I feel like its getting worse, I constantly feel like everyone hates me including people in my family. I don't dare to tell anyone anything that's wrong because I dont want to become a problem for them too. The anxiety is becoming so overwhelming that I just want to sit in my room and be alone, I don't know how to deal with it anymore.

I'm sorry that your anxiety has reached overwhelming levels in your life. This means that you just may have to tell your family or a friend that you have this problem. That it's become unavoidable or just about unavoidable if you're going to be stuck in your room alone.
You might want to make an appointment with your GP or internist and tell him or her about your anxiety. He/she may prescribe an antidepressant for your anxiety or may refer you to a psychiatrist. Either is fine. You badly need a counselor to help you deal with your anxiety, new meds and any other related issues. And there will be issues besides what has come up here.
There's a lot you can do to reduce your own anxiety. I can give you a list of many things, non-drug things, that have proved to be helpful to other people on this site, if you'd like me to. Just let me know if you're interested. I wish you well!
