Yes
You can hire a lawyer or do it on your own.
Call Social security and get the forms.
If you decide to go back to work after being on disability they will work with you while you are on a trial period. So you won't lose the benefit right away.
You can work part time on disability and make up to a certain amount
I did mine through an attorney back in 2016(?). It took about 6 months; don't know what it's like now. I was fortunate to be approved on first application, many aren't, but it can be appealed. A friend of mine won on appeal. Make sure to document everything . When approved you should receive retro pay from date of application.
you can apply for your state’s disability insurance first. In California, it’s a short application that you, your employer and doctor to fill out. It helps if you need the money.
For social security, it’s more complicated. I’m reading Nolo’s Guide to Social Security Disability.
The answers you have gotten from Dolphin, Bee and Cat are excellent. Social Security usually turns down everyone the first time. There's nothing wrong with getting help when you need it. Returning to work part time is a good idea if/when you can. You need money to live on. I originally went back to work as a volunteer. Don't give up. It's awful how hard you have to fight when you are at your lowest point. I used to think maybe "they" hoped I'd give up, kill myself and go away. The Nolo Press books on anything legal are excellent. Would your doctor/therapist support you if you felt you needed to apply for disability? I was turned down until I ended up in hospital in Los Angeles. Wish you well.
