Has anybody utilized genetic testing for more accurate medication options in treating their depression and what has been your experience with the success of this route. Thanks for any input anyone has on this subject.

I had the gene test done and it said that I would not respond well to SSRI's so my Dr. tried lithium and welbutrin which has not worked In my previous depressive episodes before gene testing I took SSRI's which I seemed to have responded to. The medical literature says there's not enough evidence to support the use of selecting which antidepressant to use just by going by gene testing - that there's too many other factors involved in deciding which meds to use.

Makes sense. I think if it actually was useful then doctors would utilize it. But I’ve never heard of one that does

hello yes I had it done but it turned out I didn’t have any of the problems they look for. So it was kind of pointless

I had tried a half-dozen or more meds for depression/anxiety without much success. I did a genetic test from Genesight that used my dna to determine which meds were best suited for me and it showed that none of the meds I had tried were good for me except for Klonopin which I already knew was good. I started on one it recommended which was in a different class of meds than what I had been trying and it has worked well for me. I still had to do therapy and deep emotional healing but am much better now. The other thing is to make sure your hormones, thyroid and adrenals are functioning properly, if not they can cause or contribute to depression/anxiety. The Genesight test was paid for by my insurance.
