Caffeine and Anxiety

davidthecoder profile image
33 Replies

I had an extra pot of coffee yesterday and noticed my anxiety was way worse than today, when I had only one cup.

I did some research and see that there is a link between caffeine and anxiety/panic attacks.

Does caffeine make your symptoms worse? I might have to stop consuming it altogether, or in very moderate amounts.

I`m a coffee drinker always have 3 big mugs every morning sometimes it does make my anxiety worse and a bit light headed but I drink coffee some days and don`t have breakfast that`s my problem.

davidthecoder profile image
davidthecoder in reply tokenster1

I drink it because I want the energy. The problem is that I probably have too much, and get the racing heart/thoughts that I associate with my anxiety. But really, that is probably from the caffeine.

I have read that around 90% of US adults consume caffeine daily.

Hi David…! I’ve had a habit in the past of buying coffee beans in bags, grinding them at home and brewing coffee all day. It was for only about one year. I had to cut down because the anxiety got to be too intense. I’ve read up on caffeine use disorder. I guess it’s a diagnosis in the DSM5.

davidthecoder profile image
davidthecoder in reply toDowninil

Yeah that is exactly what I was reading about as well. I believe anxiety is related to the nervous system (like fight/flight response), and so it makes sense that a CNS stimulant might make anxiety worse.

I am thinking I might stop drinking it altogether and see if it helps. This morning with only one cup, I already feel a bit more mellow...

I hope you can get out of the habit of drinking so much of it. I was miserable during that time.

davidthecoder profile image
davidthecoder in reply toDowninil

Yeah, I know some people will get withdrawal symptoms such as headaches when they cut back. But if it reduces my anxiety, it will definitely be worth it.

I am going to try just one cup in the morning for a week, and then maybe none at all for a week and see what happens...

Caffeine free has @ 3% caffeine compared to full roast.

And is so delicious Downinil... I switched over to Caffeine free years ago and look

forward to that hot cup of jo in the morning and even evening w/o any drawbacks.

I use a flavorful creamer. Anything takes getting use to. It's worth not getting the

kickbacks of Anxiety and symptoms. Good Morning All :) xx

there’s a list of medications that you should not take caffeine with. antidepressants are one.

Good to know, although I don't take any.

Yes! It makes me really shaky too. I use to only drink half decaf and half caffeinated, but I couldn't even handle that. I cut out the coffee almost 2 years ago, and I feel less alert, but less anxious and shaky. I drink a lot of water now, flavored with juices. I eat a lot of non-dairy chocolate, but never dark. I also take a multivitamin at the doctor's suggestion, and it's really helped with my energy levels.

Same LadyZen with the decaf cut out too. Def have those mornings of envy when I see people with their caffeine wide awake and I’m like darn that option has never been an option. But water and juice is great. 😊

I miss the smell of coffee the most.

SayNOtoPanic profile image
SayNOtoPanic in reply toLadyZen

recently I’ve missed the smell. But for a good two years smelling it would trigger me cause it was a reminder that it triggered my anxiety attacks in the past.

oh David. Never been able to have caffeine with the exception of iced teas like passion tea or green iced teas with extra water to break the them down. Used to enjoy decaf but even that I have to be careful as it can be triggering since some decafs have trace caffeine. Minute amounts. Maybe try to breakdown ur coffee with extra boiled water or boiled milk and split your consumption amount over three servings in the day instead of big amount in one sitting. Hope it helps.

1000% for me. Some are more sensitive to caffeine than others. I love it when i need to get things done, but it can wreak havoc on my anxiety, for sure.

I am so happy you asked this ! I recently had a bad anxiety flare up due to drinking crystal lights and hot chocolate everyday. I felt anxious and it scared me and made my anxiety worse. In crystal light it has aspartame which is something I stay away from but when i found out it was in there i looked it up and found that aspartame is linked to anxiety and depression.

Caffiene doesn't bother me anxiety wise...I drink some every day..I try to avoid too much because it will defeat the weight loss surgery.....everyone will be different

One cup, maximum two actually boosts my mood. I try to use it sparingly. However a lot of coffee/caffeine makes me edgy and that is unpleasant.

For me I would say I use it occasionally as a jumpstart to my mood when I feel I need it. I try not to make it an everyday habit.

Caffeine used to bother me a lot, so I would drink decaf or 1/2 caffeine and 1/2 decaf. For whatever reason, now I am 66 and it doesn’t seem to bother me as much. If I think I am going to have a really anxiety-provoking day, I just have one cup of full caffeine.

OMG! You had a whole pot of coffee? I understand that we're all different and that caffeine affects us differently, but a whole pot? As I've aged, I can only drink one cup of coffee first thing in the morning. I try to stick with herbal teas for the rest of the day, although coffee tastes much better!

Caffeine will cause my anxiety symptoms to become immensely worse. When I'm anxious I don't drink any caffeine at all.

Good morning, caffeine definitely affects and spikes anxiety. Well atleast for me it did, I had to stop taking it all together as my anxiety was through the roof. Ativan was the only thing that would keep it at bay. I am just starting to drink coffee in small amounts. Anxiety is evil. Hope things get better, happy holidays

Caffeine is not good for anxiety, especially in larger quantities.

If I drink too much caffeine, I get jittery and anxious and it can mess with my sleep which - of course - makes me more depressed. I've learned that I can have one double espresso in the morning and that is it. It took me awhile to find the right amount.

Hi David the answer to

You’re question as regards the caffeine it can be addictive to requirements as it as a effect the body and mind due to it’s elevation increases alertness but also can be addictive to the consumption amount taken which effects the nervous system can reduce fatigue and tiredness and stress but got to take it to mind too much can cause adverse effect on individuals
