Room full of people

Why is it so easy to feel so alone in a room full of people, everyone talks and I'm left to myself, no one talks to me, I try to be part of the conversation but I don't understand what they talk about.

My partner goes went through this for his teens and into adulthood. He never felt comfortable in a room full of people. Reason why was because he had social anxiety, just he didn't know what it was. So he isolated himself. The problem from self-isolation is that whenever his family had dinners like Thanksgiving, dinner or Christmas or Easter he always felt like he was on an island. Everyone would talk around him. And if he wanted to talk, he felt he couldn't because he felt he couldn't relate to what others were saying.

At that time he was working at home doing surveys in order to make money. Of course that's a foreign concept to his family who are working jobs out in the real world. He's just alone in his room on his computer. By the time he started working at a real job. He still really couldn't relate because well his siblings had work friends. He didn't have anybody. Didn't even have friends.

As luck would have it we met and started dating and eventually moving in together. But in that time we went on adventures. He was able to get some stories of his own to tell. But more importantly, he got confidence in talking to people. Eventually he made friends at work and has hung out with them outside of work.

Really what it comes down to is confidence in that you have something to say. If you pull yourself out of the game, it's real easy to get lost in the crowd. You are worthy of sharing your story. Share your likes and dislikes. Or even ask questions if you don't quite understand. Be a good listener, that also comes in handy. Because sometimes people just want to be heard, not fixed.

Btw welcome to the forum. Wishing you light and healing on this journey 🫂❤️
