I'm currently completing a masters program in school counseling and want some advice on the "do's and don'ts" of school counseling. Can you tell me any good or bad experiences you've had with your high school counselor? I'm 38 years old and I do not remember any major interactions with my school counselor. The only interaction I remember is attempting to change my schedule and he gave me a big fat NO! I went through many difficult experiences in school and could have greatly benefited from a listening ear. Times are different now and the expectations and job requirements are much greater. I really want to be the best that I can for students. Just curious if you have any advice. In my opinion, building relationships is one of the most important aspects of the job. I want students to feel comfortable coming to me about anything in terms of academics and social emotional.

My husband was a troubled teen because his Dad died when he was 15 years old. He told me that his high school counselor told him that he had no hope of going to college and that he should think of a trade job. Fortunately, my husband didn't listen to him and he ended up going to college and finally finishing with his doctorate. It took him some time to straighten up, but he finally did. He is a wonderful husband and father of two successful adult children. Please don't make assumptions about students because they are misbehaving.
