stomach bug

I am terrified of getting the stomach bug. I haven’t gotten it since I was a kid (I’m 24 now). I keep thinking that I’m bound to get it since I haven’t had it in so long, but idk if that’s how sickness works. Is it possible to go 15-20+ years without getting the stomach bug? Any suggestions on how to not be afraid of this?

I can understand that, I am worried about getting Norovirus and realised that I haven't had it for over 15 years. You can't build up a resistance to stomach bugs. So not having it for a long time wouldn't put you more at risk.

that is comforting to hear! Thank you! It’s probably been about the same for me since I’ve had it. People around me are getting throw up bugs. I’ve been sick with stomach issues but Haven’t thrown up from it

Theres no timeline for getting sick, you could go another 20 yrs without getting a stomach bug. Try and see your recent stomach issues as the substitute for what other people are getting. If its any comfort i havent heard anyone mention getting a stomach bug since maybe last year

thank you so much. I guess I have this fear that if I get it I won’t be able to stop throwing up which is terrifying to me

Let’s think it through. Worst case scenario. You get a stomach bug and vomit. You go to a doctor and maybe he can treat it. There are anti nausea meds. It probably won’t be as bad as you have it built up in your mind. You’re making yourself sick with worry. Which can lower your immune system and cause more problems. Trust and have faith that you can handle whatever comes along.

So stomach bugs are preventable for the most part. If you wash your produce and keep your kitchen sanitized and follow safety protocols if around someone who is sick then there is no reason to be fearful. There are cases of contaminated food but you could go your whole life without encountering that. I think it has more to do with food best practice - something you can control. The only time I have ever gotten a stomach bug was when I was lazy about washing cilantro. I learned my lesson. I even wash bagged spinach that says "triple washed".

thank you so much for sharing! I know you can also get it from others who are sick. That’s what I’m most worried about. But your message definitely calmed some of my anxiety

Well hand washing and staying home when you are sick are the most tried and true. Nurses work with sick patients all the time and do not get sick on a regular basis. You said you haven't gotten sick since you were a kid. Kids get a lot of colds and stuff because their bodies haven't learned how to fight them off. That is another reason not to worry.
