My depression completely crashed and I'm suicidal. And the depressed part of my brain is convinced all my friends hate me because I'm depressed. It's really tempting to take all my pills... but I won't. I have a kitten and he's my saving grace. I also got asked to leave my job so going to stay with my parents to hopefully recover.
I want to distract myself though and keep busy while I recover, but I don't know what to do. Nothing's capturing my interest

Small steps. Do something, anything and consider it an accomplishment. Make your bed. Fix dinner. Take a walk. Take a shower. Your depression is telling you to do nothing but that often makes it worse (for me at least).
DeerMousePhD, sorry you are feeling down. I like to read as a distraction. It keeps my mind busy. Do you like to read for pleasure? What about crafts? Knitting or sewing? I am sure your parents will take good care of you. Stay strong.
Your doing the right thing staying with family while you heal. Here are some things that help me. I start every morning with the Wim Hof guided breathing exercises free on you tube. I get 40 minutes of cardio exercise daily. I do resistance bands weight training every other day too. I use cold water therapy. You tube and the internet has plenty of information on it. Cold showers for health. Cold showers for mental health. Cold plunge benifits. Wild swimming. You just need 5-8 minutes of cold water. I spend time with my family and grandkids. I have my dog . I try to think of ways I can make the world a better place. Find a good dr too.
Thank you for sharing. I am so sorry you are struggling with depression. Your life matters and you reaching out here is a sign that you do want to live. You just want the pain of the depression to be gone. I have been there and know that deep dark feeling of despair and don't want to live with those dark depressed uncontrollable feelings. Have you seen a doctor? Are you on medication? Do you go to counseling? All those things are how you are going to feel better. If you think you will harm yourself, please go to the emergency room and get help.
I am so glad you have your kitten. I have two and I know how precious and comforting they can be. Yes, your kitten is a great distraction, so focus your energy and thoughts on him. It is good you can be with your parents. Right now the most important thing is for you to feel better. Don't worry about anything else.
Here are a few techniques I use when I am struggling. I hope you may find them helpful.
1) Healing comes from the inside out. It starts with letting go of the things of the past, forgiving and changing our focus and behavior. Becoming aware of what you need through self-care and personal nourishment. Take time for yourself - you are worth it. Like taking walks, baths, massages, mani/pedi/, listening to uplifting music/sermons and anything that makes you feel refreshed and renewed.
2) The 557 breathing technique is take 5 deep breaths in while thinking good thoughts about yourself like I matter, I am special, I am strong and then hold the breaths for the count of 7 focusing on those words about yourself, then let out the breath slowly for 5 seconds letting go of any anxious, self-defeating, unhealthy thoughts. I do this one to three times a sitting.
3)The gratitude journal is writing down something good every morning and night something that went well in the day, or something I appreciate about myself. Taking our focus off of the anxiety and depression and focusing on positive uplifting things really helps. What you think is what you believe. So thinking uplifting things you believe those things but the reverse is true - thinking negative self-defeating things, you will believe those.
4) Emotional Freedom Tapping - bit.ly/3AVYNiX You use pressure points to tap on those points while you repeat positive uplifting things to yourself.)
I will be praying for you. Feel free to pm me if you'd like to chat. Hugs and God Bless
Thank you for everyone's responses. So I moved in with my parents for a bit, it's really weird. I'm trying really hard not to think of the future even though I kind of still have to... But I'm distracting myself with video games, drawing, watching Youtube, and playing with my kitten. Thank you so much for all the care and advice! The suicidal thoughts are gone for now, but it's like I'm aware of them just around the corner? So yeah, keeping busy but in a slow-paced way.
I am glad to hear you moved in with your parents for now till you feel better and get back on your feet. It is also great that you are distracting yourself and that you aren't having suicidal thoughts anymore. Just take one moment at a time. You will continue to feel better and feel like yourself. Give yourself time to heal. I will continue to be praying for you and if you ever want to chat feel free to pm me. Hugs and God Bless
I'm sorry you are going through this. But you're not alone.
Sometimes I find you have to challenge these dark thoughts helps. Buy a journal and write down whatever the thought is. Then dispute it. With logic, evidence etc.
Sometimes being flippant with your thoughts can sometimes make you laugh. Like if you're brain brings up a golden oldie tell yourself "ooh I know this tune. Play something else!" Lol makes me laugh
Engaging with life is a good distraction. You've got a kitten that's real good distraction there. Take photos of him/her. Catch up on some reading if you like to read. I'm a comic book nerd and love books.
Coloring books for adults were all the rage. Talk with your parents about their lives and if they knew their grandparents etc. Sometimes those are nice stories to know.
Must remember that you are not your thoughts. Thoughts can't hurt you.
