I've been fortunate to design and build my most recent dream home. It's a passive solar home on 5 acres. It's very functional and comfortable. The tall vertical pipe is for rain water catchment used for watering the garden, I also just like it's sculptural quality. We also built it on a minimal budget by using simple forms, cost-effective materials and using stock window sizes. It incorporates an open floor plan and large deck for indoor/outdoor living.
