Does therapy make it worse?

I started therapy back in August after experiencing relationship anxiety in a new relationship due to a traumatic ending to my previous relationship. However, after doing individualized therapy for only a few months, I feel as though my anxiety has gotten progressively worse. I feel like it has caused more harm than help and I now have debilitating anxiety in all facets of my life: work, pleasure, relationships with others and most of all, myself. I constantly feel on edge, overanalyzing every move I make, depressed and low with myself for feeling worse, having little interest in doing things I used to love to do and overthinking even more than when I started. I feel constant dread everyday and can not even be by myself anymore. I started Intensive Outpatient Program and trying to steer away from starting medication but I feel so lost. I know they say it gets worse before it gets better and therapy can make you feel worse in the beginning but this feels like it is getting dangerous/detrimental. Any thoughts or words of advice?

Hi abc2,I am sorry to see that you are currently feeling worse rather than better. Therapy does take some time to do its magic.

You have written a very good summary of your progress or lack of it in your therapy sessions so far. Please print it out and give it to your therapist. The therapist will not be offended and can actually work with you some more to overcome this state of affairs.

Have you had a full bloodwork panel? Sometimes a hormonal change can do that. Make sure to ask for the best thyroid test. There are three different levels, and the most commonly used one can miss a reading.
