Healthy solutions?

I'm looking for healthy solutions to deal with depression and anxiety. I'm very isolated, so ideas to help with not feeling so alone would be helpful. I am a stay at home mother (son with autism), wife, and work part time as a virtual accountant.

I have tried over 20+ medications over the past 15 years to deal with depression and anxiety with no success. I know that medications don't work for me, so now I'm left with finding my own alternative solutions, as the doctors can't seem to help me.

Any ideas or feedback would be much appreciated.

I think connecting with the right people may help. I joined here so I can connect with others as I do not have anyone that I can rely on in the real world. Can I ask how did u get into being a virtual accountant?

Thank you for your comment. I have worked in public accounting for 6 years and I got lucky! I found a job working for a small company that needed a tax accountant and was offered the fully remote position. The entire company went fully remote during the COVID shutdown and stayed that way. I'm so thankful for the job!

Hi there,

I have a son with learning disabilities. Grown up now, and working as my carer.

I noticed you didn't mention your husband or Partner; Is he supportive?

It sounds like he isn't particularly so.

How old is your son? is he school age yet? will you try to go back into work when he goes to school?

Is there a particular reason you are isolated?

Sorry to be asking all these questions, but I was in a similar position 30 years ago, and I'm trying to get a sense of the root of your depression.

Cheers, Midori

My son is 3 and my husband is very supportive. I have a therapy session set up for next week and I hope that helps me. I have been a victim of sexual assault a few times and never sought therapy for it, so I'm sure that plays a role in my already naturally anxious constant state of mind. What worked for you, since you mentioned you had this problem too 30 years ago?

My late and unlamented was a Narcissist with a very short fuse, expected a trophy wife with Mary Poppins tendencies (perfect in every way!) Instead he got me!

I left him several times, and he needed to only beckon and I would go back, he had me so controlled, promised me faithfully he would no longer hurt me, and broke it in less than 3 weeks!

He was a drunkard and a violent one.

Even when I had my daughter he came into the delivery room and tried to take control! Then had a conniption fit when they put up a blood transfusion. Daughter was 4lb 3 at 36 weeks and stayed in the hospital 3 weeks until I got my legs back, as after 3 months in the hospital on bed rest I had no muscles left!

When my daughter was 4 months old he broke one of my ribs.

When I had our son he said he wasn't his, just because his hair was white blonde and his (husband's) was dark, forgetting mine had also been white blonde. When we went home from hospital we had to get groceries, we loaded them into the car and I took the trolley back to the trolley park, turned round and he was driving off with the kids in the car!

The number of times I went to work with a black eye was easily a handful. I put up with this kind of treatment for 15 years, because back then there was no help for battered wives, but eventually I got away and went to a refuge, which sent me to another one many miles away where I could get a non- molestation order and start divorce proceedings. I didn't have to get a divorce though, because he suicided.

All I felt was a sick relief.

That's enough, but there was more.

Cheers, Midori

Good afternoon,Have you thought about getting involved in a church or maybe a support group? Have you tried getting out and exercising? Do you have any hobbies - ( walking, baking, reading, crafting, biking, swimming...?) Have you thought about maybe taking a night class at college- ( history, writing, pottery, baking...?)

Thank you for your comment. I actually just joined a choir and signed up for piano lessons. I think that will help tremendously!

Is spirituality something you're interested in? Churches, synagogues, temples, and mosques are great ways to find community. Even if you don't believe in God, the Unitarian Universalist church accepts theists, atheists, and agnostics. Plus, liberal Christian denominations tend to also be welcoming of skeptics and non-believers.

Thank you for your comment. I've thought of that. Joining a church, although I identify as pagan, so I'm not sure how that would work. It would be wonderful to find a group of people that I have things in common with that doesn't involve religion .

Geishmo Wonderful! Unitarian Universalists are accepting of Pagans, as well as people of pretty much any faith. Many UUs would identify as Pagan, Humanist, Christian, atheist, theist, agnostic, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, or a whole variety of other belief systems. What unites us is our Six Sources and Seven Principles. You can learn more about Unitarian Universalism on uua.org. I think that might be a good place to find community, and often UU churches have covenant groups specifically dedicated to Pagan beliefs and practices.

Unitarian Universalists are the only one I would consider, and I'm Pagan too!
