So...my therapist thinks I should find an activity that will help take my mind off of my anxieties and help me get out of my own head. Any suggestions out there?

Hi Gadawglvr76,

Thank you for this post!

I don't have any that actually take my mind off my anxieties at their worst, but the rest of the time I just stick to what I enjoy. Reading, audiobooks, film, bird watching (I'm not a birder, I am disabled). If I'm not in too much pain I enjoy crocheting. Computer games.

I'm looking forward to this post getting lots of good suggestions. I could use some too.

I have been looking for a creative outlet also.. I never developed one when I was younger. There were too many children in the family and not enough resources. Now much older, I have been asked "What is your passion?" I enjoy decorating but I cant seem to narrow it down. I have been going "within" and inquiring Divine Mind. I'll see what manifests from that.🤔

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of hobbies out there to choose from so I hope that something out there will strike you as interesting: and in the best case scenario, as something that will help with your anxiety. There will be limitations due to personal limitations and boundaries, but pushing yourself can be a good thing. There can also be regional limitations like the area you live in and the environment. But some options could be hiking, going to a state park, visiting a garden, taking tours through historical sights or going through nature with a guide. Picking up a sport or physical activity might help. Martial arts, dance, yoga, fencing, tennis, running, swimming, biking, and so on. I've recently been getting into art to express myself: painting, sketching, drawing, playing/learning an instrument, and/or singing can really help get some emotions out of your mind and help you cope, focus, and process. Volunteering is another great option and there are so many different kinds of organizations out there. From soup kitchens, to care packages for soldiers, Special Olympics, Letters for Rose, and so much more. Hope this helps!

The only things that seem to distract me are the hobby groups that I belong to on FB. One is for "beach glass" collectors. I love looking for beach glass, which you will find at any rocky lake beaches, depending on where you live. I have to drive to Lake Erie in PA which unfortunately, is two hours away. But, it's so calming just to walk along "treasure hunting". Then there are wonderful crafty projects where you can use the glass pieces. Long story about beach glass, but if you're not familiar, it's even interesting to google it.

Exercise and fresh air are both fantastic for anxiety, preferably together, so find somewhere nice to go for a walk. It's a great start 😁

That depends on what interests you most. Some people like art, others like to write stories or poems. Personally I love cooking new things. Anything that keeps you occupied and happy is worth trying. Good luck 👍
