Recognize your triggers and avoid them at all costs*

My triggers are my mom when she’s angry. I need to learn that there’s nothing at all I could say for her to think more logically. It will only lead to arguments and I should have learned this from many previous conversations with her where she’d cut me off and hang up on me in the middle of the conversation (like a kid). But it is because she needs control in her life and her being upset can be a trigger for me and makes me really anxious. Another trigger for me is listening to depressing songs while reminiscing about my previous partner without reminding myself of the bad times to. After all, being delusional is a mental illness and I need to recognize these things in order to heal.

Yes you're right about avoiding things, like songs, that make you feel depressed! I avoid certain TV shows etc. for the same reason. It's better to keep the focus on positive, helpful things.

I watch old classics with my mom and sister. Recently I was triggered by an old show called Family Affair. It’s from the 60s. So I am avoiding it for a while.

On the other hand, I find Once Upon A Time very uplifting!

I definitely understand. I deal with the same thing with my mom. I’ve been able to deal a little better because I’ve accepted that she is 70yrs old and won’t be changing anytime soon lol. I also try to remind myself that she has my best interest at heart but her need for control doesn’t allow her to express it in the best way.

Yea it’s unfortunate and sometimes hard to see that they have our best interest when their actions are neglectful and hurtful. But I’m glad to hear someone can relate :) our moms are getting older and need us to be understanding although they might not be.
