I have the same issue. I lay in bed wide awake, I guess I have alot on my mind.
Hello I have experienced anxiety induced insomnia and you just have to find what works for you. I make it a habit to do yoga daily (I use Yoga with Adrienne on YouTube), take a warm bath, hit the gym, etc. I also remove any stimulation a couple hours before bedtime (tv, phone, exercise, etc. and read a book or meditate. If I have trouble falling asleep or feel anxious close to bed time I use a hypnosis or meditation for Anxiety video and fall asleep.
Ask your doctor for some anxiety meds
I take a warm shower. I then start reading a good book. A glass of warm milk creates tryptophan, a natural sleep inducing chemical created by the body. The same feeling after eating Thanksgiving turkey. It sounds like a lot but now I just drink the warm milk and read and it works. The last method is the doc giving you lorazepam. Also known as ativan, addictive benzo that puts you right out. It works but it's a benzodiazepine. But it beats sleep deprivation. If anyone has a different way, please let everyone know.
I use chamomile tea. Lavender Epsom salt in tub. Trazadone is a medication for sleep and it's not addicting drug.
I am on Trazadone. It does okay, sometimes I can't get to sleep right. In general ok.
I am 66 and have had sleep issues since I was young & I am sure anxiety was the reason when I was very young. As an adult I owned a tavern for 20 years & worked very late & erratic hours so my sleep was terrible then. I've tried everything over-the-counter as well as a wonderful meditation tape & have also seen two people for insomnia. When I saw a psychiatrist a few years ago who specialized in insomnia, I finally found something that has worked for me regarding my waking up at all hours & being unable to fall back to sleep. After 20 minutes of laying there awake, get up & leave the bedroom. Do not turn on any device such as your phone, tv, or computer as the blue light will stimulate you. What works for me is to put soft music on & read for an hour or until I really start to feel sleepy; it helps that I'm an avid reader. Other things a person can do is simply sit with your eyes closed & listen to soft music, meditate or listen to a meditation tape, journal, or perform muscle relaxation. I can almost always fall back to sleep after an hour & get a couple more hours in; it's not perfect & once in a while doesn't work, but overall this is the only thing that has ever helped me. Calm & Headspace have apps you can look into that have all kinds of relaxation practices you can listen to; some are free. Good luck.
The best two things I have found are (1) learning a progressive relaxation meditation and being willing to slowly go through it until I sleep; and, if I'm still tossing and turning after half an hour, (2) getting up and putting a low light on in the living room and reading or something relaxing. If I fixate too much on trying to sleep it messes up the "sleep space" that is my bedroom -- I try to reserve that for soundly sleeping, and if I'm too wired I get out of the bedroom and try to relax my mind elsewhere.
They say to eliminate screen time before bed, as the blue light causes your melatonin levels to surge and can keep you awake. Easier said than done, though. I get really bad anxiety if I don't fall asleep to TV. Sometimes instead I'll use a meditation app on my phone. Calm is really great -- they have "Sleep Stories" that are specifically made to help you sleep. My favorite ones are people describing hours-long train rides. I still struggle with insomnia, though.

Hi there, i had the same problem and i started taking sleeping aids from costco. it didn't help and i built a tolerance to it. i also took Benedryl and it made me felt like i was dying thrice so i stopped. it interfered with my breathing. i started exercising daily and it helped. just doing 3 mile walks and now gym three times a week helps. sometimes i still can't sleep so i do word puzzles. for sure those sleeping aids don't help and they lead to other problems. best to exercise so you tired your body out and force your brain to rest. lastly lavender helps to relax your muscles if you can stand the smell, have a lavender sachet near by but not too much cuz the smell maybe overwhelming and lead to sleeplessness. don't give up, keep trying.
