Klonopin Withdrawal Symptoms

Hello All,

I’ve been tapering down my klonopin with my psychiatrist. We just lowered it down to .25 mg per day. (Almost off it!) Since then I have been feeling a little twitchy sometimes when trying to sit still, like my body has to move. It’s kind of like my body or head has to jerk to the side. I just want to know if anyone else has had this side effect of klonopin withdrawal? I hope it’s just the medication and not something else!

I had been on klonopin for probably the last ten years! I didn’t even know it was bad for you. My psychiatrist never told me. I didn’t know until I joined this site and saw other people struggling with it. I recently switched psychiatrists and we have been working on a slow taper. I was on 1 mg twice a day and have been tapering it down .25 mg per month. It’s been slow but I haven’t had any side effects or withdrawal symptoms until now.

More that likely the symptoms you are experiencing are from withdrawal. One thing you might consider with your taper is reducing only one day a week. So the first week of the month , pick Monday and reduce that day from .5 to .25 leaving the other days at .5. Then the next week reduce Wednesday to .25 and so on. It will take two months vs one but it will go a lot smoother. The other option would be to go down to .375 instead of .25.

I take .5mg in the morning and at bedtime. I can take a 3rd in between if needed but try not to. Over the summer I had a very stressful personal situation going on. My best friend was in the ICU and never knew when I would have to drop everything and run to the hospital. So for about 6 to 8 weeks I was taking the third one. Did notice on the days I didn't take a 3rd pill I often felt the same way. Twitchy and like I would crawl out of my skin if I didn't keep moving. So I think what you're experiencing could very well be from tapering down the medicine. You might be noticing it more now because you are so close to being off it.

You are in partnership with your Health Professional, they seemed to have been slowly and steady reducing your medication, you are on the last lap now and yes sometimes you may get side effects as you describe so try not to worry.

Hi,

In have been taking Klonopin for about 26 years. I used to take it then not take it, i would get what i believe like mini seizures. So i started taking it on a daily basis.

Curious as to what is bad about it. There are personality changes and tiredness. Is there some documented issues with long term use? I have often thought about getting off it but need something to deal with the thoughts and anxiety for why i got on it in the first place. I am asking not as in any way as a comparison as to your situation as everyone is truly different. Just curious as to what you know as to the risk of using the medication.

As to tapering off i have seen a couple of videos and people say it should be done slowly. Quickness in this case does not win the race. You will be dealing as you know with the withdrawal effects but your mind and body will be dealing with stressors the medication was suppressing as well. Twitching i would expect as a natural reaction and temporary as you stabilize to different chemical balance and learn to deal with atressors in a more healthy way.
