It depends really..if you are a different ethnic minority and a group or individual is looking at you disapproval, it would be hard to say it was in your imagination.
If it was a neighbour who was talking about you, and you overheard them, would you feel it was your imagination? If people back off, or make sick noises, would you take this as a private joke in any event? Many people get name calling or fists waved at them if they don't like you, the only difference is that this makes you feel rock bottom. Unless you can ignore the verbal bullying, then you will always feel sensitive. There are many cases of social network where kids are upset with information, and web sites which actually show people to top themselves and if they are not a size 8 or wear spectacles or have some other physical problem then the world is not kind. May be overcoming this negative perception by ignoring it is the only way, but when footballers have had enough of racist chanting, and the football association deny it, then this behaviour will continue. I guess we all learn to toughen up but sometimes kids cannot rationalise it and may self harm.

It is hard to relax when fact is overcome by fiction. People need to learn to overcome their upset through cognitive behaviour therapy, rather than believe it is their fault because they are not reacting in the right way. May education should help people understand their reactions when faced with criticism or allegation. Don't you think being there may not always be enough?
