Just thought I would say hello and introduce myself. I came across this site in a self help workbook that had it in its resource section. I’m a welding student here in Jacksonville, FL, and I’m anticipating graduation in August.
Welding is tough! I’m in Phase 9 of 10 and we’re learning a new process. Today was the first day and I totally start worrying and getting stressed out. I’m worried that I won’t grasp the concept well. On top of that I worry about the next phase which is pass or fail... and after getting a job in the field.
I know that I deal with anxiety so I recognize my worry is something I need to cope with. I’m always on edge and it takes a toll on me.
For those that do tend to worry a lot, what are some techniques you use to help cope?
“Stay out of the future”. You don’t belong there. You’ll come up with worst case scenarios. My friend here GratitudeFirst taught me that. It’s freed me! And have the attitude of: ABUNDANCE!! There are a million welding jobs out there I guarantee you. And you are a fresh and new and young worker that many will clamour for. YOU are the prize, not the other way around. Don’t put mental roadblocks in your way that don’t exist in the physical world. People are hired to a large degree based on whether they’d be easy, fun, good to work with and be around. Just being a person who can be enjoyable and compassionate is a huge plus and you’ve got that going for you. Anxiety is what the mind does. It’s trying to keep you “safe” but you must override it and actually get in there and say “Stop!! Shush!!” I don’t need to do that anymore, think those thoughts. They don’t serve me. I used to call out to my mom mentally as a bad habit (died when I was young). I finally stopped it with, I don’t need to do that anymore. Hope this gives you a tool or 2. Welding is so cool, great career choice. We watch Forged in Fire on the History channel, have a welder too and play around a bit, wanna make rustic furniture.
Very awesome insight and advice. You’re absolutely right. I do need to stay out of the future and value myself more. I tend to compare myself to my classmates as well, which is no good. I need to focus on myself and my own development, while focusing on the now and not the future. That will come when it comes. I’ll practice staying out of the future, and controlling my thoughts (still struggle with that from time to time). Thank you for your words though! That put me at ease a bit Tomorrow’s a new day!
