Hi Jason28,

You are not alone. My oldest kid is 29 years old and I have been struggling with anxiety since I was about 5 years old. That's when my parents went through an ugly divorce. The depression started at the age of 10. That's when my father suddenly passed away during Christmas holidays.

To make a long story short, I learned to pretend to be okay. I don't think I was doing a good job, but I don't think family knew what to do. So, I forced myself to do things that were mandatory. I made excuses and hid in my home whenever possible.

Fast forward to 2018. I practice mindfulness and meditation. I learned about the subjects through articles online and Youtube videos. I also read lots of books. I am learning that I can take control. I can manage anxiety, depression, anger instead of letting those things manage me. It's not a quick fix, but I think it's worth it. This is what is working for me. You will find what works for you. You are definitely on the right track because you are reaching out to wonderful people in this community.

Before I started taking a mood stabilizer, I believed medication was not the answer. I changed my mind because I think the meds are helping already. I think the biological component is real. I noticed a difference very quickly and the one side effect (tingling in my hand) is nothing to complain about. A few months from now my opinion of this medication might change. If so, I will deal with it when the time comes.

Hang in there, Jason. I think it's going to be okay. :)

therapy, antidepressants, sharing here, reading others posts going through the same things, finding out I am not alone with these feelings and very greatful for finding friends and others here who are going through the same stuff. I have found what has worked for others, and I take what I need and appreciate the rest.

I’m a mom and a teacher with anxiety and panic disorder. So far I have been really good at pretending to feel normal around my kids both at home and at school. It actually helps me to calm down and shake off some of the panic attacks just pretending that they aren’t there. It doesn’t mean it goes away, but it is easier to deal with things throughout the day.

Fake it till you make it!
