Seizures and ssri's

(Please do not read if you have anxiety towards symptoms like I do.)

Not sure if this is the right place for this discussion. But figured since most of us on here that are on medications most likely are using an ssri of some sort, I'd ask.

Just wondering if anybody has had a seizure (while on ssri's) with no prior history of having seizures?

I have heard about this online. My doctor makes it seem like it's not something to worry about. I'm going to get another doctors opinion on it soon.

I've never had one. It sounds terrible that there's not really anything to look out for before one occurs. I'm scared I will have one why driving. Or while walking somewhere. I just don't want to get a serious injury from this.

Thank you.

Could you tell me why you are worried about seizures while on ssris?

I knew one person who had one and he hit his head in the restroom. He didn't really have any history of seizures, it was just a side effect from an ssri possibly. I've read about it a lot online and it seems some people have them. My doctor makes it sound like it's somthing not to worry about. But if you have one while you drive you just crash I'm assuming. And I have to drive on a lot of busy fast roads. I've heard of people getting serious injuries and even dieing from falls or violent convulsions during them to.

It just sounds very brutal and not something I could handle.

If you think it could happen then maybe don't drive as insurance could be invalided if the meds say that's a side effect .

As far as I know this only happens with something called buproprion, which is usually prescribed to help people stop smoking. I do know one person who had seizures while taking this, but it is NOT a sari. I don't think you need to worry, although no harm double checking with your doctor.

First of all, everyone is different. Your biology and medical history and experiences also influence the results of treatments you may pursue. It's important to have a doctor you trust. Their job is to help weigh the pros and cons with you regarding what risk factors might be associated with proposed treatment.

Anyone can have a seizure if your "seizure threshold" has been lowered. Many things can alter your threshold including alcohol most importantly. As with other conditions, one might have a "predisposition" for certain things which may or may not present themselves. Some factors are preventable and others are not.

In your case, your doctor is most likely not concerned in your case that you are at an increased risk for seizures on the meds you take. Being fearful of side effects often keep people from receiving the care they need. When put into perspective the personal risk might not be worth the stress.

I have taken SSRI for many years and have never experienced any terrible side effects. I check in with my psychiatrist and we review the efficacy of treatment and whether to continue.

Best wishes!

I know right. I get paranoid when starting new meds too. It took me 8 months to get past my fear and start my new med effexor. I am on day 7 know and it's going well. I hope you can push thru soon and start to feel better on your med. Most side effects are on there because there is a possibility that it can happen but most likely won't. Try not to let your anxiety rule your mind. Good luck
