Covid vaccine

Does anyone know anything about the availability of the Covid jab over the autumn/winter? I have heard nothing. My last jab was in February. Apparently Covid is on the rise. I’m thinking of getting a private vaccine, but apparently these may not cover the latest variants.

I don't think we will hear anything until middle of September time when we start getting letters for the Flu jab if you are entitled to it.

I'm not a conspiracy freak by any means but having had about nine already I decided to forego my late spring one on the basis that perhaps my body needed to sort itself out for a while. I'll probably go with next autumn's offering along with the flu jab.

I did the same. I'd had my winter Jab in Dec and didn't feel too good after it, but was also having chest problems and UTIs from Dec through to April . 3 or 4 lots of antibiotics so decided to miss out on the spring booster. I will have the 'flu jab but the Jury is still out on having the next Covid one.

Good afternoon

Thanks for your post on the Atrial Fibrillation support forum.

I have tried to look it up but it doesn't say anything about the covid vaccine for autumn 2024, it might be best to wait until September and then call your local Doctors surgery to see if they are doing the vaccines.

Kind regards

My son's OH is head nurse at a local surgery so I should hear when it happens.

Thanks. I asked again at the pharmacy today but they say they have heard nothing.

Yes, there is another variant going around (and I had it) but I haven't heard of anyone getting any sicker than with flu and a head cold. I've had two Pfizers and haven't seen any reason for taking a third. From what I hear, people do fine taking zinc and quercetin when they start to feel "off." I increased my vitamin D and did a nasal rinse. Oil of oregano is nasty but another good virus fighter. All these are safe, no worries about reactions.

Thanks for posting this. It seems the vaccine will be available for over 65’s in the next few months.

As long as the cold doesn't get you first.🥳

Had a text message from my surgery yesterday to inviting me to follow a link and book a flu jab, which I did. It said we will be offered the covid vac at the same time.

My guess is there will be far fewer getting the jab this winter for a variety of reasons.

I have read that the action of the vaccine is not to real so much to offer protection from the variants it covers (which is quite short term), as on the long term type of immunity it confers. This means that even having had a couple of booster shots, that person will be protected from developing the serious forms of covid.

In vulnerable groups though, it is said still to be worthwhile. his NHS web page gives good information:

If you are listed as at risk, you will be contacted automatically. In COVID I was listed as clinically exceptionally vulnerable, so I leave it to my local Practice.

We had our Spring one in May! Expect we will hear about the Autumn jab in September October sometime. We usually have both together at our surgery but always book our flu jab with Boots as we got an e mail last week about booking one and already booked for Oct 7th just in case we miss the FB post or no one texts us from the surgery. Our surgery is not good with letting us know things We often gets texts meant for the other - not that it matters and ams ure sometimes they forget to press send or post! We nearly always have to cancel the flu jab appointment at Boots as about a week before it is due we finally hear from the surgery.

Didn't know you could get a private Covid jab. Will definitely have one as a close friend (younger and generally fitter than me - who isn't :) ) has been ill for 3 weeks with a new variant.

The private Covid jab is nearly £100 at Boots. Not many people will be able to afford that.

I hadn't even heard you could get one privately so was interested to hear you could. Here in Wales my wife wasn't considered at high risk but her hospital in Manchester stated she was. We were worried that at some stage she wouldn't get the jab so it is interesting to hear that there is a private injection out there but we have found she just follows me in and gets the jab because she lives with someone who is high risk, but doesn't actually get the invitation herself! Unlikely to need to go the private route now if things continue as they are but will if they ever refuse to give her the Covid injection.

It’s just so expensive. Not many people would pay that. Maybe eventually the price will come down. It’s only about £20 for the private flu jab. I think it’s unfair that people under 65 don’t get any protection from Covid.

Samazeuilh2 profile image
Samazeuilh2 in reply to Desanthony

You can definitely get a private jab, but I read that it doesn’t cover the latest variants. However, I might be wrong about this so please check what the coverage is.

Desanthony profile image

I doubt We will need it if we get offered the usual at our surgery. I will definitely get it as over 80 but my wife has never been invited for the more recent ones so she just comes in with me and they let her through to have one - it's weird that they don't invite her but NHS Wales has never accepted that she is at high risk but the hospital in Manchester treating her has sent several letters to that effect. So far so good and she is up to date.

Just had my first ever bout of covid a couple of weeks ago. The virus itself was just like a cold but exhausting - I spent most of the week in bed!

But it kicked off my afib massively - from a few minutes AF every couple of weeks to several hours every day for a week.

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply to Barny12

My PAFib started in 2014 . I had a bout of AFib in Feb 2023 and always had to go to A&E because my heart rate and blood pressure soared. While I was there, they did a Covid test, as they did then and they said it was positive and they think that’s what brought the AFib on that time. I hadn’t had Covid before and I didn’t feel ill. All I had was a minor cough, so I thought nothing of it. Hoping, that now I’ve had an ablation, that if I catch Covid again, it doesn’t start my AFib again, that would be awful, now I’ve gone all through that procedure.

Copy of my reply on another post recently

Positive two weeks ago, negative one week ago and still clearing the horrendous congestion.

A positive for me, first covid since my ablation last December and no AF this time. Previously it was an instant trigger.

Best wishes

I am on the Patients Participation Group, (the PPG) for our surgery and we got an email from the Chair person, asking if anyone would volunteer to help at the Vaccination clinics in October, when they are doing both the Covid and Flu jabs. They think it will be the same cohort as last year, but are still waiting to hear. They are, however taking bookings for the new RSV jab, for the same group of people that had the Spring Covid jab.I ‘m not old enough for that yet. They should do over 70’s, then I’d get the extra Covid jab and the RSV one.

Strangely enough, just a few mins ago, I received a message telling me to book an appointment for the flu jab in October, no mention of the Covid one though. This is Leicestershire.

I am so sorry! It’s a flu jab booking. Had ablation 2 days ago & still a bit dozy!

Nothing about Covid so far (Exeter). Last booking message for Covid that was sent was the Spring one.

When I had the 2 jabs last year, they suggested I have them 2 weeks apart, not together, which I did. Not sure why, but I had just had my ablation the month before, maybe that was why.

That makes perfect sense. A good precaution. Sounds like your Surgery was on the ball!
