Covid autumn booster and flu vaccs

Having said I'd have my flu and covid booster separately I've just booked to have both at once at our surgery.

Has anyone strong feelings either way? I've never had reactions to any of covid jabs ( Astra Zeneca Moderna or Pfizer) or to any flu jab.

Had both done at once last year with no I’ll effects, and it’ll be the same again this year. Might just get both in the same arm…. Saves you having two sore arms!

I get them in the same arm as well and have it done on the arm I don’t use as often lol.

I reacted badly to 4th dose which was Moderna but not to the Pfitzer but this is an entirely different cocktail and I believe there will be no choice as you won’t know until the day.

My very fragile immune system wouldn’t cope with both at the same time so I’m leaving a week between.

Curious as to what kind of reaction you got to the Moderna booster? Have you had reactions to flu shots in the past? Thanks, etheral

I had a reaction to every vaccine but usually quite mild. 1st flu shot I had I had a swelling the size of an egg on my arm for a week, think I posted about it here, with extreme, throbbing pain and flu like symptoms (which I had expected) for about 3 days. 2nd flu shot about 3 years later and after I had pneumonia and was extremely vulnerable and was persuaded by my GP, I had what I would call not out of the ordinary reaction ie: slight swelling at site, redness and feeling ‘off’ for about 3 days. 3rd time I had a flu shot was last December after recovering from COVID and one week after my 3rd Pfitzer jab. Pretty much same - sore arm, feeling off for 48 hours. The big reaction was in February to my 4th COVID jab and the Moderna vaccine when I had extreme weakness, hot flushes, muscle aches, joint pain, fatigue, headaches, sore throat, loss of appetite (very unusual for me), tummy upsets. I was testing for COVID throughout which showed negative. I just felt that my poor immune system, always overactive at the best of times despite immune suppressants, was just exhausted and needed a rest - that was my instinctive reaction and sometimes we need to go with gut reaction. Took me about 6 weeks to stabilise. During that time we were also in the process of selling 2 houses and negotiating on another, which sure didn’t help so stress was added into the mix and I acknowledge that could have caused some of the reactive symptoms.

The fact that Moderna has x3 more mRNA than Pfizer might have something to do with it.

You may have a point!

I'm also reluctant to have both at the same time - I don't like the idea of babies having 3 different vaccines together either 🙄

My husband has his appointment in October, and as his carer I'll be able to see what's what.

I’ve never had a really bad reaction, but got a crashing headache on the day after my Moderna booster. I just book my flu jab as soon as they are available at Boots. So I’m getting that in September, and have just received my appointment letter for the Covid booster in mid October. (We get appointments in blue NHS envelopes in Scotland, but they can be changed online.)

Having said that, Boots might charge this year as the online form mentioned that they didn’t know if they would be providing NHS ones this time round.

I admit that there’s probably no need to do them separately, I just prefer it this way. Especially as, when I booked I wasn’t sure when they would get round to the 65+ age group.

Just a warning that COVID is doing the rounds here big time again. About 5 neighbours went down, two with pneumonia on top and quite poorly. Obviously that’s not going to unusual in a Retirement Community, cottages not apartments but there are communal areas. My son has just come out of isolation after testing positive - for the 5th time!

Because we just moved I don’t know the system and haven’t had any communications but will be chasing to book both COVID and flu jabs for us both in the next few weeks.

Of course, it is totally fine, safe and sensible. The trouble with discussion on vaccines is that you risk attracting conspiracy ideas into the thread! ;-)

The best way to deal with conspiracist theories and deliberate underreporting is to have free speech without censorship. I remain an optimist and believe most people can then determine which is the better way without mandates; this has happened without undue interference with previous vaccines.

And ignore them as seems to be the case with the earlier reply on this thread! Looks like they’re on the wrong forum 😀

I didn’t fancy having both at once so have my Covid booster booked for 20/9 and my flu on 10/10 (flu at local pharmacy).

I am really undecided whether to have covid shot .Need to find out more.Saying that quite miffed hubby has been asked to book and I haven't.

Bagrat profile image

I'm definitely having it. Have had flu jab for 25 years. I do understand there's a difference. At my age long term issues are not really on the agenda. The fact some research shows less long covid in the vaccinated sells it to me, not to mention our creaking NHS. My neighbour (85) had 2 nights ,3 days in A and E, admittedly not desperately ill but came home with pressure sore.

A lot of people are wearing blinkers and don’t want to view the evidence. Otherwise they’d realise that they’ve been duped

personally I would never ever have both together and risk all the side effects in one! You’d be very unlucky to get both ailments together or simultaneously

Bagrat profile image

I've never had side effects from any or either, so my world view different!!

My question exactly. Mind boggling

Thats lucky, I did from the last booster, chills, tiredness and headache for couple of days. But I still wouldnt have both vaccinations together.

I’m unsure also as normally have a mild reaction to flu jab and only ever had Pfizer vaccine which again mild reaction to. Saying that I’ve not been called for either, my booster was 4/10/21. Think I may have fallen through the net as always had both at work and was done very early on for covid vaccine as was nhs frontline. I’ve been very lucky up to now and not caught covid despite husband catching it, but must admit to feeling quite vulnerable now as almost 12 months since booster

Never had a reaction to either the flu jab or any of my Covid jabs yet. I have had 4 Covid jabs. Pfizer and Moderna - had to check back had Pfizer for first two then Moderna third and Pfizer 4th. My wife has had Astra zeneca for first two and the first one made her quite tired for about 24 hours but that was all all the others Moderna and Pfizer for third and fourth jabs she had no problems with. Also she has been having flu jab for nearly 30 years due to her lung conditions and has only had one in about 1998 which also caused her to be tired for a couple of days. That's all. If they offered me or my wife both tomorrow we would take them both. we have had more problems with vaccinations etc for travel - especially to Africa and Middle and Far East. My job meant that I had to be fully vaccinated to travel anywhere at any time so for 37 years was used to having loads of jabs every year and tablets at the ready to mobilise at 4 hours notice so doesn't worry me at all.

Bagrat profile image
Bagrat in reply toDesanthony

When serving I was put on world wide standby which involved armsful of jabs and never went anywhere!!!

I only went down "South" on 2 hours notice for a few days holiday that I was told I would not be likely to return from - officers making sure Wills were written and letters written to wives, girlfriends, partners and parents from the bus to the departure "Lounge" and bus stopped so we could look back at the town on the way off. That ended up to be months spent on Ascension Island when the Argentine Air Force failed to surrender at the same time as all other services. Was nearly killed a few months short of being eligible for my pension (!) As you can imagine that would have been a tragedy for a Yorkshireman. Did go to the Middle East - but that was planned and I had a good few months notice for that. Yes armfuls and bottom full of jabs!

Just had both immunizations on the same day. I reacted more this time. It was quite doable for me.

I have had two Astra Zeneca , a Pfizer and Moderna was my last one.

The Practice Nurse nurse said not to have the flu jab the same day ( I was also getting a shingles vaccination the same month )

The theory was I wouldn't know what I was having a reaction too if taking them the same day/week. As it was I had a very mild reaction to Moderna - sore arm , slight headache,

no reaction at all to the flu or shingles vaccine.
