iron supplements

hello! I wondered if anyone could recommend an iron supplement that has no nasties in? The GP suggested I go on it because I’m slightly anaemic. I am very careful with other supplements to not have additives that might trigger the AF (like B12, Vit D etc) but can’t seem to find an iron supplement that is just iron, can anyone help? Thanks

I don’t know anything about iron supplements I’m afraid but I know that in my third pregnancy I didn’t want the iron tablets I had previously been prescribed so I tried eating more red meat and it did wonders. You have probably done that but if not it is worth a try. Nuts are also good.

Thank you, I’m pescatarian so I didn’t eat red meat and I have a gall bladder condition which makes it hard for me to eat fatty things like nuts which is frustrating:(

I think you need more information about why you are anaemia. Disease, drugs or diet are most common reasons. I make lots of iron but I am chronically slightly anaemic because drugs I take destroy haemaglobin. Wouldn’t matter how many iron supplements I take it wouldn’t make a bit of difference other than make me constipated.

Red meat occasionally and VitB complex often is the most effective for me. Have you symptoms of anaemia ie: fatigue? Do you get your full blood results so know your numbers?

Good idea about getting full blood report I don’t know my numbers. I’ve just started taking Vit B complex so maybe that will help. I have Diverticula disease too so I try to avoid things that make me constipated so perhaps taking iron tablets might not be the way forward for me. I do get very tired but I don’t know what that is due to. Hopefully the Vit b will help. Thank you

I have been slightly anaemic for decades, even when I ate red meat. I was referred to a consultant haematologist, who discharged me as i was only borderline anaemic.About a year ago a nurse practitioner gave me a prescription for iron tablets. I had one with the result that I lost all my energy. Trying to get out of bed, I fell onto the floor, I live alone, and didn't want to create an emergency situation, so sat on thr floor for several hours. I ate some calcium tablets and fell strong enough to get back into bed. I didn't take any more iron tablets.

My diet is pescatarian. I continue to be borderline anaemic, but don't worry about it.

Thank you for your reply and sorry to hear about your experience. I’m also pescatarian. Good to know you just continue without taking them.

The doctor could prescribe ferrous sulphate or fulmerate, I would think?

My natural path recommended I try something called a “Lucky iron fish” and it goes in the water when I’m making broth or soup (anything liquid) and then you just clean it and use it again very natural no pills. It’s working quite well for me!

My blood iron was at the lower end of the normal range and I found "Floradix: Liquid Iron and vitamin formula" helpful.

Made in Germany with added organic forest herbs. 10ml twice a day , and very easy to consume.

Available everywhere but quite expensive.

And there is a vegan version available.

I use Feroglobin liquid from Amazon, it's vegetarian, without it my energy levels drop. My Mum had a problem with iron too, she used to take a horrid liquid iron when I was a kid, certainly not veggie.

Iron supplements are my current "specialist interest". I've been just above anaemic for at least 15 years and have now dipped under the thresholds. About seven years ago, my GP suggested that I buy Ferrous Fumarate 210mg and recently another prescribed 322mg. This was at a time when I was experiencing bloating, and recently I saw a gastroenterologist. I'm conscious of warnings that extended use of pills of this strength can damage the stomach. So briefly I switched to Feroglobin Fizz soluble tablets and Feroglobin Gentle Iron liquid, both of which taste pleasant. But taking them at the recommended times, interspersed with other supplements and prescribed medication, needs some planning. The actual iron content of the Feroglobin is quite low (14-17mg) compared with the ferrous fumarate tablets (69 and 106mg). I found this website very helpful: irondisorders.org/

(BTW my relevant blood readings are reasonable. In a note to my GP, the gastroenterologist confirmed "mild anaemia and it is not clear why". I have an appointment for a telephone consultation with him on January 30 and I'm seeing a haematologist in early March.)

Hmmm... My GP has prescribed Ferrous Sulfate 325mg (5gr) tabs for me as I am also slightly anemic and I do not eat meat. I also take eliquis, metoprolol ER succinate 25mg, Lisinopril 20mg, and levothyroxine 75mg. Wow...looks like a lot of meds.....they all seem to be working well together at this point. I still run 2 small businesses and don't have very much down time. I have had 2 ablations. The last one was in July. I am from US. I had both ablations at Duke by Dr. Bahnson who is the best of the best here in the US. I have not had any AF since July. It has been wonderful. I haven't had any other issues. The decisions of adding and removing meds are always worrisome. I hate it. You're never quite sure what to expect.
