I think she will be just fine. I've had 3 ablations and you can sometimes become tired very quickly for a few months afterwards. As yours is going to be a relaxing holiday that should be ok.
I have never had an ablation but I do note that most forum members suggest a fairly lengthy recovery period with much reduced activity. My feeling is that if I was post ablation I would not go on this holiday. The whole procedure of getting from your home to your destination is stressful in itself. The heat will be an added strain. If you leave the hotel you will encounter an army of salesmen and finally there is a distinct possibility of food poisoning and dehydration.
I apologise for the negativity. I have travelled a lot in the past, it is easy to become ill especially in the very hot countries. Egypt is very hot, it would be a shame to sacrifice some of the potential benefits of an ablation.
No, just gove plenty of time at airports to avoid stress and stay well hydrated.
I'm inclined to agree with Popepaul though I also haven't had an ablation. I have travelled a fair bit though and there's absolutely nothing restful about air travel these days, and yes, Egypt is very hot and dodgy tummy is a strong possiblity. The concern is less about how your wife will fare during the holiday - I'm sure she'll be fine - but more about the possibility of disrupting the perfect recovery of her heart leading to long term sinus rhythm heaven!
If you do go, I have you both have a lovely time 🙂
No one here can tell you if your partner will be ready for such a trip, because regardless of their post ablation experience, we all heal differently.
Personally, I would not have been ready for a trip like this at the one month post ablation and didn't feel near my old pre-ablation self until the 3 month mark.
In addition to fatigue and exercise intolerance, which is very common, other complications such as post procedural pericarditis happen with frequency, as well as post procedural arrhythmia's during blanking, including afib.
From what I've read on various afib forums, I'd say that about half the people would be ready for such a trip at the 4 week mark and half wont.
I went to Italy (from Los Angeles) 12 days after my ablation. Felt great, no problems whatsoever. In fact, as a very active person, a relaxing vacation made it easier to avoid getting back to activities and, well, relax! Everyone is different
On the information I was given after having my second ablation it said no flying for four weeks so I looked it up and it’s something to do with the hole that they make in your heart as it takes four weeks to heal and the pressure in airplane wouldn’t help with it.
I think Egypt and its people are wonderful and that you will return with lots of fascinating stories to tell, with not a single one of them anything to do with AF!
I’ve been told that when you have an ablation they make a hole in the septum. This takes many weeks to heal. Longer than 4 weeks. In fact mine has never healed.
I would be very wary about air pressure on the plane and no matter if only one of you carries luggage there is still quite a lot of activity involved at the airport
If you were going anywhere but Egypt where hygiene is not a great priority according to my brother in law who travels there a fair bit then maybe chance it
In my opinion I would try snd rebook the holiday to a later date. Just my opinion. Incidentally what does your EP recommend?
Back in the day 2006/10 I was told I could go back to work a week after my ablations but the second one took a couple of months to recover although I would say going on holiday is a good thing in general apart from the airport. Make sure you get your consultants approval (for insurance)as my Gp wouldn’t go anywhere near it but would let me go back to work which was heavy maintenance!Have a good one life’s too short .
It always makes me laugh when they say you can’t do this or you can’t do that, but funnily enough you can go to work.??? Well my boss expected me back to work after 1 to 2 weeks with my first ablation and said I should be fine.!!!
So I asked him how long he’d been a specialist on returning to work after ablations.? He didn’t even know what an ablation was 😂 I actually ended up with 6 weeks off and my doctor agreed with me that return to work times differ with different folk.👍
