omega 3 supplement

Good morning everyone. I saw my cardiologist yesterday as I’m having a new knee next week and for my own peace of mind had an echocardiogram which shows my heart is now as it was before AF and high blood pressure were found 3 years ago. She said this showed my blood pressure tablets and healthier lifestyle (including lots of swimming) were doing the trick! Anyway, I asked if I should take Omega 3 and she said yes, but not as part of a multi vitamin as a high strength is required. So, any advice on brands and strength would be much appreciated! Thank you….

Glad your heart has recovered. I read an article recently that compared controls taking supplements with people with similar conditions not taking them. The finding was that Omega 3 supplements didn't help near as much as including a couple of servings of fish a week helped. Sorry I can't find the article now. I did wonder how much supplement the supplement takers were taking, and how many were doing it to make up for an otherwise bad diet. Anyway, I've been taking Omega-3s for years- right now I'm taking EPAs, the supplement is called and I believe that each capsule has 1500 mg of Omega 3s and related Omegas. And I have a piece of salmon in my fridge that is going bad, as I don't really like it. Also, I think you're supposed to quit Omega3s a couple of weeks before surgery because it affects clotting. Is there somebody you can ask? Or just wait to start.

thank you so much for your reply - really useful. I am definitely going to do more research - will contact the BHF for their view as well. I have salmon once a week but would struggle to eat any more oily fish! I won’t start taking anything before op - that’s a great piece of advice - thanks again.

long before I had any heart problems in round 2006, I saw Larry King on TV pushing that OmegaXL. I thought it sounded great as preventative, so I started taking it. It costs me about $100 USD a month, and I've been taking it all these years. and I felt good about it, like I was really doing good for my heart. Well in 2018 I had 4 cardiac arrests, but fortunately I was in the hospital when they happened so they could save me. I had high bp for about ten years before then. I was diagnosed with mild heart failure and AFIB. so omegaXL did not stop me from getting these problems. HOWEVER, we will never know if things would have been worse had I NOT been taking it. so I continue to take it.

thanks for your reply. I hope you are in a much better place now, and I was interested to hear your thoughts on Omega 3. It is obviously difficult to know, like you say, what effect taking the supplement had on what happened. I’ll do a bit more research! But thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Omega 3 is also suggested for macular degeneration....it is said to help slow down the deterioration in the devpt of the problem. BUT it can interfere with blood clotting so I am sticking to Lutein as i take Apixaban and cannot afford not to take it.

thanks for this - I must admit I’d heard that but as the cardiologist didn’t mention it I kind of dismissed it. I’m going to email her just to be sure ….
