AF is a rhythm problem and not the same as heart fallure. This just means that your heart is not keeping up with the demands placed on it.

Ischaemic heart disease means that the heart muscle is degraded probably due to lack of blood supply due to blocked arteries.

Use the search box top right and there are lots of travel insurance topics with plenty of advice.

I don’t have blocked arteries etc but once you enter AF it defaults and adds ischaemic heart disease ?

Rubbish!!! No connection.

As soon as you declare you have AF it goes in automatically and you can’t remove it and it happens on every site I have tried !!!

Are you declaring Atrial fibrillation ? From memory it could go on and ask you various questions about other heart conditions.

Bob has answered your query re CHF & AF. I've been told that insurance for Spain is getting to be pretty pricey due to the hospital fees.

I can quite believe the £600 you were quoted. I can beat that with 2k for a 10 night cruise taking in Spain!

bluemoon in reply to Jalia

That's ridiculous! I have travel insurance with my bank account. Declared medical history and AF as pre existing conditions , and cost is extra £116.00 for the year. That's for Worldwide and includes cruise cover and covid.

Jalia profile image
Jalia in reply to bluemoon

I agree that it's ridiculous! Other factors at play though. I'm very surprised at the low cost of your cover though, particularly as it covers cruising and worldwide.....I can only assume that you are a youngster in the peak of health 😉

Lainie2875 profile image
Lainie2875 in reply to Jalia

I have managed to get a single trip for 93.00 for Mallorca We want to do a Greek island cruise later in the year but that’s going to cost a lot more but decided to wait and see how I get on as taking out annual at this stage will be well over 500 not including cruise cover.

What a lot of people forget is they may have cover that they have declared existing condition on but have not updated with the insurers if something has changed and that could prove costly

Ha!! I wish ! In my seventies, had 2 ablations and managed on meds now.

Jalia profile image
Jalia in reply to bluemoon

Still very surprised at the quote then ! I would double check if you planned to go to the US for example or cruising to Spain !

bluemoon in reply to Jalia

Yes, just recently returned from a transatlantic cruise to Miami, and also a Canaries cruise. All insurance docs checked on embarkation. And insurance renewed 10 days ago.

Must be the bargain of the century for travel insurance. I wonder if anyone else can match this?!

Roto profile image

Oh WoW.. sounds like a bargain.. what bank do you use... might be worth opening an account to get travel insurance…..ps I don’t need your pin number😉

My pin number wouldn't get you much! Lloyds Platinum A/c , but Nat West do it as well.

Allclear and Staysure are popular ones mentioned. Also have a look at: medicaltravelcompared.co.uk

Lainie2875 profile image
Lainie2875 in reply to jeanjeannie50

Thank you I think I have found what I need via Medical Travel Compared website StaySure and All Clear were some of the most expensive. However I have learnt that the old E111 type card that was discontinued was replaced by a GHIC that woks the same way. This card covers you for Emergency or A&E treatment in EU at the same rate as the nationals of that country. So if in Spain the nationals have free health care ( pensioners do I believe) then with the card you get the same.

Of course you still need insurance as this is for emergency but it’s a good back up.

I have applied and been accepted via Gov website today .

FicusElastica profile image
FicusElastica in reply to Lainie2875

It turns out if your EHIC was still current it remains valid till it expires. I didn't know that so now I have both :D I dont' know where that leaves me. Be really careful about Spain, there are a lot of private ambulances which will take you straight to a private hospital and there you are stuck, you need to tell them you want the public health hospital, but the public health hospitals don't like taking tourists ... Spain is a known problem area for health insurers, or used to be. Check out the small print on any policy.

I'm glad you found come cover. Did you have to pay for your GHIC card and where did you apply for it?

Never pay for GHICs! It's a GOV service. There are lots of sites saying they will do it for money - it's a cheek.

Lainie2875 profile image
Lainie2875

No it’s free I went onto Gov website as there are some that try charge you just Google GHIC and look for Gov site it took 2 mins you just need NI number xx

My packaged account with nationwide cost me an extra £171:40 per year worldwide excluding cruising.

I havn't travelled abroad since 2018 because of the Covid crisis. I'm curious to know how much I should expect to pay for, say, two weeks holiday in Europe given AF.

Lainie2875 profile image
Lainie2875 in reply to

It can vary so much depending on your current situation. If it’s settled and you have not had any new treatments in last 12 months it will be cheaper I should imagine it would be around £50 to 80 if this is your only existing condition

You can look on comparison websites to get ideas without committing to buy

We just booked to go to Spain in September, and Staysure declined my request for insurance, so had to look elsewhere. I felt like a fragile, useless old bird! Useless maybe, but fragile I am not.

Don’t give up I had same issue with some quotes try this site (Medical Travel Compared) they were the best I could find good luck

Try " Cover for you" that doesn't add heart failure or ischaemia heart disease to AFIB.I used it twice last year for approx £35 each weeks trip. But I am ablated and have no more treatment planned. I did use it when I had AFib and "controlled by medication" and it was not dramatically more expensive, but that's 5 to 6 years ago now.

Just tried and it added ischemic heart disease 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

i have just been quoted £1114 for two weeks in cyprus for myself and husband

Lainie2875 profile image
Lainie2875 in reply to rubyr61

That’s crazy I am sure you will find one for significantly less. Unless your partner has health issues don’t include him. My partner got separate ins for 20.00 for himself .

rubyr61 profile image
rubyr61 in reply to Lainie2875

both my husband and i have heart problems both type 2 diabetic husband insulin and artery problems in the legs nice to see you are out of hospital now

FicusElastica profile image
FicusElastica in reply to Lainie2875

Another caution here - if you have separate health insurance, and you have to cancel because the other one falls ill in the UK - you may find you are not covered for cancellation! I think this is a grey area but I know someone who was caught like this. If the partner is deemed to be "likely" to fall it, you won't be covered unless you have declared them ... right back round to start again! We were "fiddled" like that by a well known insurance company who insisted my partner had a more expensive policy (from them, of course) when he had to go for another test. They didn't tell us about the catch. Fortunately nothing went wrong. Also they declined to give him a full refund on the original policy after his results came through because "you should have asked for it at the time" (even though the outcome was no problem) and they were so reluctant to put this in writing that someone phoned me to "explain" it and refused to email!

If you are going to mainland Europe use your EHIC, if it’s still valid date wise it still covers you, then whrn it runs out date wise get a GHIC. That will cover you fir all emergencies. It’s essential really to get that. Obviously cruises and long haul are another case.As for other insurances I think it’s been covered below...

Sue

Lainie2875 in reply to Morzine

It’s surprising how many people don’t know about the GHIC I am usually up on all this sort of thing but I didn’t realise they had introduced a new type of card My partners retired Police and he’s put the into on their group he’s been inundated with replies lol

Morzine profile image
Morzine in reply to Lainie2875

You can still use the old EHic till it runs out thrn change. Yes lots of people don’t seem to know about it, perhaps the government don’t advertise it enough....then they get less to pay for eh!I was in Spain, heart went wrong....used EHic and paid nothing, got excellent care.....amazing!

Sue

I've been looking for European insurance for cancer. The advice is to look at a lot of sites / companies and to be sure you describe your conditions exactly as they are on your GP medical records / consultant letters, if you don't know what your condition is and get it wrong that can invalidate the insurance, heart conditions I have heard are particularly awkward in this respect as there are so many of them. Prices and what companies will cover vary enormously. Check out who owns the company. Some companies who give "good" prices have been caught abandoning people who are hospitalised abroad. I dn't think this is common but it seems to be something that can happen.

Afib and heart failure are two different things, and afib can cause heart failure. It's not something to be ignored. And as someone else posted, ischemic heart disease means the heart has damage to a lack of blood supply. I don't think I'd be traveling with either of these conditions, but that's just me, and don't understand why, as far as I can tell, this has not been treated.

Sorry you need to go back a long way to catch up with the posts to get the full pic But in short it’s only been since Nov my AF has been continuous and has caused HF

They have tried 3 ablations over as many years 3 cardioversions and medication but I am very sensitive to meds

I used to revert back and have good 6 months between episodes but it’s now continuous so trying different meds again but being told not to go to A&E has given the HF chance to get hold

I am having another Cardioversion on 1.3.22 !!!
