I have been referred to the Bristol Heart Institute as I have had 3 short stays in hospital with very fast AF in the past 12 months. I am now on Digoxin 185mg daily which seems to be holding my heart in NSR also on Warfarin daily.Could you suggest a travel ins company that would cover me as my current one has just refused because there is a refferal waiting. Think it may be a long wait too!
Thanks
Jackie

I could only get cover for everything apart from AF episodes when I was on waiting list for an ablation. I hadn’t had hospital admissions though. I don’t know if that makes any difference.
However, I still went to Europe with an EHIC card, checking out the situation with healthcare in the country I was in. In most cases it was better than UK. In France you have make a contribution for example, whereas Spain is free. The only thing you won’t get is medical transport back home after an AF episode, So you have to assess the risk of that being needed. I had to wait 9 months for procedure and wasn’t prepared to abandon all my holiday plans.
I've used staysure, but not with a referral waiting. But always call them, never use the web form. Computer usually says no, but a human can be talked to
(0800 640 4829) This is the phone number for All Clear travel insurance. I recently took insurance out with them. I’ve got permanent AF and am waiting for an ablation plus have other health issues. It wasn’t cheap (£ 1,370 for the year) but I’ve a family wedding to attend in Corfu in August and felt trapped not being able to travel abroad. Didn’t go abroad at all last year and whilst there are beautiful places to visit in the UK you can’t beat a bit of sunshine that is more guaranteed abroad. Hope that helps.
I have found the best option is with a bundled bank account offering annual travel insurance. I pay a supplement for cover (under £200) but am not on an anticoagulant. If you’re awaiting diagnosis/investigation as opposed to check-up/monitoring, insurers will usually decline cover because the risk is unknown.
Hi. I’m not waiting for any procedures or investigations, but I am newly diagnosed with AF, hypertension and mild/trivial valve problems. We’ve been researching travel insurance and found GoodToGo provided good cover and was far more reasonable than many others companies. We were looking online, but we phoned them with a query and they were also very pleasant and easy to talk to. Hope this helps!
It’s worth trying your home or car insurance company, I use LV and found them reasonable. It may also be worth asking if your referral is for further investigation looking for a new condition or just to discuss treatment options for your existing AF diagnoses. My insurance don’t want to know about treatment changes for an existing condition until renewal so I didn’t need to tell them I was having an ablation as that is considered a treatment change and not a new condition. Changed my AF treatment from medication to ablation on renewal and there was an increase of a few pounds. I guess it’s all about you and the insurance company’s interpretation.
