Does anyone know if taking Buscopan triggers afib pls. I’m on a maintenance dose of flecainide (50mg x 2) and bisoprolol (1.25mg once) and wonder if I take Buscopan does it have any issues with this medication. Think I have diverticulosis and getting stomach cramps. It happens every six months or so and am looking for something to relieve the cramps if possible

Thanks for your help

I would ask my doctor. I took buscopan but it didn't suit me after one dose so stopped it immediately. I didnt give it chance to upset my arrhythmia.

Always best to speak with GP or pharmacist about drug interactions. We are not qualified to comment.

I can only tell you that when I had a CT colonoscopy for diverticulitis I was supposed to have buscopan but they asked if I had any heart issues. I replied ‘Only AF’ thinking they meant cardiovascular disease but they looked alarmed and said it was a nono for any kind of heart problem.

So definitely ask a pharmacist. I use Mebeverine if necessary or simply paracetamol. Perhaps the IBS forum would be helpful? I do know how awful those cramps those cramps are 💜

Thanks Buffafly. I’ve dropped a note to my cardiologist asking whether Buscopan can be used when I get the cramps and whether there’s any interaction with the medication I’m on. They are so uncomfortable when they happen but will not take it if it rocks the afib boat. My guess as to the cause would be diverticulitis as my colonoscopy identified diverticula in my bowel although my specialist said these were nothing to be concerned about as they’re age related. I see him again on Monday

The packaging leaflet suggests that it shouldn't be taken by people with heart issues, including arrythmias since it can cause tachycardia. The evidence seems to have come from the injected form but has been extended to include the tablets:

I wouldn't take it without asking my GP. When I have taken it in the past, it did nothing for my IBS / DD at all. In fact, despite many attempts over the years, I've found nothing to help with this except by, at all costs, avoiding constipation. The best way I've found for this is to take daily prunes along one particular brand of prune juice called "Sunsweet". I do remember once trying a peppermint preparation called "Colpermin" that was recommended by my GP but it made the spasms far worse. You have my sympathies!

Thank you for your very helpful comments. I’ve emailed my cardiologist so just waiting on him coming back to me. Do you take regular medication for the afib please. Just wondered if taking flec and bisoprolol might make a difference.

I used to take fleck and bisoprolol and then Amiodarone and bisoprolol plus buscopan ,but I was taken off heart meds since the pacemaker so 🤞I don’t have to go back on any heart meds . Good luck with the cardiologist reply and hope you get some relief from the diverticulitis pain …

My cardio has come back to me and advised that buscopan can cause afib. I’ve done more research and found mebeverine for the cramps can also be used. My cardio has advised that he isn’t aware of any afib issues but to check with the pharmacist which I will do.

Will do 274. The one I’m going to do more research on is mebeverine. Looked at the drugs.com site for any contraindications with flec/bisoprolol and it’s ok. Need to check the small print for any side effects relating to the heart.

It's contraindicated in people with Afib, I was given Buscopan for an MRI and my heart rate went crazy, the scan had to be stopped. The radiology team should have known this but obviously didn't !
