For me 400 mg - 600 mg daily was ideal. However split the dose and don't take it all at once.

Not unless you have access to a loo ! The body will get rid of it so it's best to spread it over the day - eg half in the morning and half at night.

Paul

Edit - I really should order some more. I'm sure I was taking about 800 mg a day at some point - not all at once though !

Was it magnesium citrate or magnesium oxide or some other type?

I’ve just changed to mag taurate ...from citrate ...as they are better for ectopic beats which I’ve had for many years, touch wood hardly felt any at all , Long my it last 🙏🏻🙏🏻

in reply to Deary63

Is that with taurine in it? Like the thing in red bull an amino acid?

Not a clue...just read it’s better than citrate for extra beats !,

Go into YouTube and search “Dr Sanjay Gupta York Hospital, Magnesium”. There you will find at least 5 videos which will tell you everything you need to know.....

Dr Gupta endorses Magnesium (Mg) Citrate 200mgs once a day from H&B.I use Mg citrate from Swiss Bioenergetics via Amazon.

Each of my capsules contains MgCitrate 500 mgs which contains 150 magnesium.

This is equivalent to 40% of the NRV (nutrient reference value). The manufacturer recommends no more than 1-2 capsules daily.

Mg deficiency is a vexed question. Dr Gupta does not mention dietary magnesium.

It’s important to check with your GP because Mg is excreted via the kidneys.

Same here. My Mg Citrate tablets are marked 650mgs giving 200mgs of magnesium. I take two a day on the assumption that is giving me 400mgs of actual and absorbed magnesium.

Not all magnesium types are equally well absorbed. My understanding is that Mg Oxide is poorly absorbed and that taking 400mgs of Mg Ox per day actually provides very little absorbed magnesium.

in reply to CloudRunner

Mine says hydroxide which muat be similar I do have to take about three or four to have any effect at all. But even if its crap it still seems cheaper to take four or five of them then one or two of the dear ones.

in reply to

Mine says mag hydroxide and 375mg which is says is 100 nrv% it doesn't say 100% nrv just %nrv and then 100. But you're saying 500 citrate is only 40% he seems to say I'm taking the worst kind. But its still helping hopefully a better type will help more.

Magnesium bus-glycinate. 200mg morning and 200 mg in the evening. I’m sure you’ll get another dozen suggestions too.

Hi. I find taking magnesium in tablet form has me making frequent trips to the loo. I am taking pumpkin seeds daily now which have high levels of magnesium but not the same laxative effect.

in reply to Jeaniebeans

If that's the case have you tried taking a vitamin c with them? I take hydroxide and if I take my vital c at the same time I get less of the tummy rumbles...I haent have a strong laxative effect more a feeling like my intestinal wall is spasming as it goes along so I can feel it go around for a while. I have had laxative affect from taking vitamin c and so I always try to build up the dose slowly over time and if I hit the point I get laxative effect I pull back. Because obviously laxative is going to deplete you of things...its drawing water into your system from cells and quickening the time you can absorb it so if you take so much that you get diaria then that's not going to be being absorbed. Epsom salts is an old laxative for colon cleansing and for constipation and its magnesium salts of some variety. But diaria will deplete your body of nutrients especially potassium. Which is also an important electrolyte. I'd say go up to the point you get laxative and keep it just under that point for a while and after a while try upping it a small bit. Also not taking them all at once. If I take all four at once I get really rumbly so I take it spaced out through the day and with some orange juice or tomatoe juice or vitamin c to have an acid in with it and some potassium.

So far as I can see, there's no dose-related evidence available for taking magnesium and since there's plenty already in most people's diets, it seems that 300 mg / day is going to be enough to give it a trial on your ectopic beats or arrhythmia.

If the amount you take causes any kind of tummy issues or laxative effect (e.g. loose stools or diarrhoea), then you know you are taking excess because the body will only absorb what it can use or store. Any excess will create an osmotic effect in the intestines as the body absorbs water into the bowel to try to dilute the magnesium levels and expel it from the body.

I'm not sure what the correct dose is, I take Mag Taurate as it is supposed to have the minimum laxative effect, but be careful where you source your supplements as I believe there are many fake products out there. Amazon even posts a warning about the products they sell saying some may be fakes!....you couldn't make it up.

As an example, I bought some Mag Taurate from Vytox on Amazon. I am convinced these are fake, the packaging was cheap and nasty, every one of their supplements seems to have the same best before date, the tablets are hard and don't dissolve easily, I researched the company, wrote to them, searched for it on Google maps, looked up the directors, the company appears to not exist at the posted address and is no longer trading although it is supplying huge numbers of supplements, very suspicious, I chucked them all away, be careful.

Good luck

I purchased 2 different makes fromAmazon. Both had different weight capsules in each bottle. I’m convinced most are fake. I’ve actually spoken to Dr Gupta and indeed he recommends magnesium. I’ve read a few papers however, saying there is not enough evidence to say magnesium had any benefits for cardiac conditions. What is important is to have a correct blood test to see if you are deficient of magnesium. I’ve tried magnesium and had no benefits. Several months in fact .

in reply to kalgs

“Serum magnesium level may remain normal in spite of decreased total body store of magnesium (decreased up to 20%). Magnesium absorption is impaired by phytate, fatty acids, and increased phosphate. [3] Hemolysis causes increased results, for levels in RBC are 2-3 times higher than the serum“

My understanding is that body stores of magnesium as reflected by measuring it in the red blood cells may be low, when serum levels are normal: and vice versa. So, not straightforward to interpret magnesium test results.

Your point is ?

in reply to kalgs

That's not what I've read at all. I've read it has no impact if someone doesn't have a deficiency. But if you have a deficiency it has an effect.

Hi Kett123,For me its more about a cocktail of supplements rather than just Magnesium. Yes, I take Magnesium Glycinate but also take other supplements that work alongside the magnesium, particularly Ubiquinol CoQ10. Please read my story. Since getting the supplement doses optimised, I have had no AF, AT or ectopics for 268 days!

Hi kett magnesium oil rubbed into skin will help avoid toilet issues

Hi there, afield of mine swears by 'magnesium butter rubbed into the soles of the feet, stops restless legs and aids sleep

I think it depends on the person. I take vitabiotics and cheap old magnesium because its what I can afford. I have to take at least three to notice a helpful effect. Two tablets is 375 so I guess its around 550 I'm taking if I take three. (Maths not my forte) but if I take more than that I get weak legs and my tummy spasms ...I also started taking one a day then when I had a bad episode I took the three and it helped. So now I take three one in morning one in afternoon and one at night (or two at night or three if I've forgotten the others) if I took all three at once in daytime old get weak floppy legs and tummy rumbles. So I spread it out of take at night. And I'm hoping to get power form so I can spread it out even more. You can kinda feel the tablet go through your system causing a little spasm along the way so I think dissolved would help spread the mag out. I would say for any supplement start off small and work up to your tolerance level and then pull back from that to where your comfortable...if you work up to a point where it doesn't feel good pull back to where it feels good. So get a low dose so you cab split it up and add or take away more or less rather than a massive dose cos they're really hard to break in half or crush.
