Is xarelto better or worse then eliquis?

I was given xarelto for a dvt but I’m wondering what is the better blood thinner to take xarelto or eliquis? My doctor said I could take either. Has anyone had bad experiences with either? I’m scared to take it but I know I have to.

If you are worried then Apixaban is probably better only because you take it twice a day instead of once, but of course if you have a DVT you should be very conscientious about taking either of them regularly. I assume you are worried about excessive bleeding but I believe it is very rare to have a problem. The DVT is what you should be worried about so make up your mind soon!

Simple answer, no

Well I was briefly on Xarelto in the past and my cardiologist (who specialises in promoting anti-coags in the area) wants me to restart anti-coags but changed his mind to Edoxaban. I asked why and he said briefly 'data from America was not good'.

I think on here a lot of people are on eliquis. I decided on this one as most of the reviews seemed good and if there is a problem it leaves your system quickly - hence taking it twice daily. Why not try one and see if you are ok on that. If not you can change. Good luck🍀

I took Xarelto for about five years and during that time experienced bouts of terrible hives. In February I asked my cardiologist to change me to Elquis and within a month all hives had gone

This reaction may not occur in everyone but changing to Elquis has been life changing for me.

The only problem is remembering to take it at night as well as morning as Xarelto is only a once a day tablet. I would suggest talking to your doctor about possible side effects of both. I haven’t had bad bruising or bleeding with either drug.

Thanks Jill. I asked him about side effects and he replied that everyone is different so either I could try. I can always switch to Eliquis if I need to. Nose scared about bleeding and I heard people had hair loss

Thank you for the response! I’m going to try xarelto and see how the first month goes. I’m worried about being on one for 6 months.

When I was prescribed Xarelto the ER doctor, who was writing the prescription in consultation with my cardiologist, came in and suggested that we call the insurance company to see which drug had the best coverage. We said it was not a matter of $$$ for us, which did she think was better? She laughed and said whichever one takes the least amount of your money!

We called the insurance company from the ER and were told that once we met the copay, the Xarelto would be covered until we got into the donut hole and our total out of pocket for a year would be just over $1000. The Eliquis was only covered at 41%, so we would have to pay about $5000 per year for the drug. Xarelto won the day.

Hi Molly, thanks for the response. Any side effects from xarelto? Weight gain, hair loss?

I just started it but scared by all the comments I’ve read

I was on it for 10 months. I had severe memory loss. The cardiologist believed it was caused by micro brain bleeds. It was a good thing I had recently retired because I never would have been able to keep up with work. Thankfully, the memory issue subsided within about 2 months of stopping the drug. I also had severe knee pain, also from bleeding that caused swelling. That took much longer to resolve.

Back in 2012 I had a severe problem with bleeding from Warfarin and had to stop that after 10 months.

My doctor is fine with me just taking fish oil and garlic daily now. If I do feel like a blood clot is developing I immediately take Nattokinase, which actually busts up clots. It is available in the US over the counter. In fact, with this news that Covid is causing blood clots, my doctor suggested I take the Nattokinase all the time now to prevent clots, if I happen to get infected. My wife just ordered me more.

I have a problem with the circulation in my left leg due to medical malpractice from 1974. I have calcified blood clots all along the length of the leg. They did a lymphangiogram and used a dirty needle causing my entire lymph system in that leg to get infected. It swelled and shut down the circulation causing massive blood clots. I was in intensive care for 3 weeks while they worked to save my leg. It is twice the size of my other leg, has horrible varicose veins, and has a mottled purple/rust color to it. Quite an ugly thing, but it still allows me to get around.

In 2012 I developed a blood clot that ran the entire length of my leg from groin to ankle. I got it as a result of sitting, waiting for a play performance, and then sitting through the long play with my knee bent with no leg room. I was hospitalized for a week and received daily shots of Heparin as well as taking the Warfarin orally. I ended up coughing up blood, so they had to back off the dose, regardless of what the INR said.

Then, in 2018 I developed 3 blood clots behind the knee in that leg from standing in line for 3 hours in very hot, humid weather without any hydration, all to get my Medicare payments straightened out. The government overcharged us $6,000, which took them 7 months to refund! My leg definitely felt much better within a week of using the Xarelto and I stayed on it until the memory issue got out of hand.

I am careful now to never cross my legs, elevate them whenever possible, drink plenty of water, get plenty of exercise etc. I am a fanatic when it comes to choosing to fly first class with an aisle seat on the side of the plane where I can extend my leg into the aisle, only sitting on an end seat in a theater so I can extend my leg, not taking long car rides without getting up and walking around etc.
