Blood clots in mouth

Hello everyone

I have had afib now for 20 months. Take Sotalol 80 mg twice a day and Xarelto (rivaroxaban) anti coagulant. I have had problems with bleeding gums on and off since this treatment and put it down to the anticoagulant. However last night my mouth became suddenly full of blood followed by the appearance of a large blood clot. Cleared it all away and bleeding eventually stopped so went to sleep. I was woken up three hours later by the same thing happening again. Has anyone else had this problem? I am a little freaked out and travelling on business in the US at present and won’t be home in the UK until Thursday next week. Any advice welcome. Thank you.

Hi Debs, I get nose bleeds, but they start quite high in my nose. If I keep my nose up just a little, I can mostly control it easily. However, it seems to stay in my throat and I can bring up blood clots and lots of blood. My daughter, when she was young had the same thing, but it was her adenoids bleeding. It sounds like you have a ruptured blood vessel somewhere in your nose or throat. As this is something new for you I think you should get it checked out. If it's happening in the night it could make you choke.

Thanks Jean. That makes sense. I will get to my GP when home and check it out.

When you wash, or cleanse your face, be very gentle with the area around your nose. Just washing my face can set off my nose bleeds.

Thanks for the advice Jean. I didn’t actually seem to have a nosebleed that was the odd thing. Seems to settled down now thankfully.

I would think it more likely aan upper nasal bleed for the amount you describe. By the way anticoagulants won't make your gums bleed. Only gum disease does that. Her in UK NHS densistry does not look after gums or dental hygiene as I found out eventually. Cleaning teeth alone doesn't cut it and you need regular hygienists visits. Sixty years of NHS dentistry before I went private and found it almost too late.

Just to add that teh onpy time I have had this sort of thing was when I was in Hospital and on aspirin as well as warfarin.

Thanks for the response Bob. I have. Dental appointment next week so will discuss the issue then. I did wonder about that. I didn’t actually have a nosebleed that was the weird thing. Seems to have settled which is good as am about to fly across the States.D

Deb , Glad to hear the bleeds have stopped. I would be concerned also if that we’re to happen to me . If you can access an MD who is an ear , nose and throat physician, they might be able to pinpoint just exactly what’s going on up there. Good luck getting some answers and help, especially if it happens again . Sarah
